A Little History...

In 1983, Dr. Alfredo de los Santos Jr, then Vice Chancellor for Educational Development, established the Center of Instructional Technology (CIT) as a "demonstration center" for faculty and staff. In 1989, the name was changed to Maricopa Center for Learning & Instruction (MCLI) and the focus broadened from "promoting the introduction of technology into the learning environment" to "working with faculty to promote and support effective teaching and learning to meet the diverse needs of students." The MCLI was under the Direction of Dr. Naomi Story until 1999 when she moved to Direct the Center for Teaching and Learning at Mesa Community College.

The MCLI provided programs and budget support for various programs such as Ocotillo, the Maricopa Institute for Learning, All Faculty Convocation, and learning@maricopa.edu. MCLI staff also offered consultation and support to the colleges regarding instructional design, technology innovations, assessment, and evaluation.

In the Spring of 2000, acting Vice Chancellor Bertha Landrum envisioned all faculty-related programs house in one place to facilitate faculty access to information and services. Newly added programs to MCLI included Fine Arts, Honors, and Maricopa CARES (education of the senior workforce).
Faculty Staff Development programs and budgets were also now housed in MCLI, and the NSF-funded Systemic Reform in Science (SyRIS) project was also moved to MCLI. In June 2000, Marybeth Mason, English faculty at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, assumed role of interim Director of the Center.

Later added programs included a suite of internal grant funds coalesced now as Learning Grants. A Faculty-In-Residence position was created. MCLI developed several new "learnshops" focused on teaching and learning and revitalized the faculty dialogue days offering eight events in 2000-2001.

In Fall 2001, recently appointed Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Dr. Anna Solley moved all Faculty Professional Growth (FPG) support into MCLI where staff was able to monitor and track all FPG processes and budget-related items. In April 2002, the Faculty in Progress Program (FIPP) was assigned to MCLI as well as the Adjunct Faculty Professional Growth Program in Fall 2002.
