2007-2008 Music Competition Guidelines
The Maricopa Community Colleges Music Competition is a voluntary event. To participate in the competition, you must be a registered student at a Maricopa Community College. Solo competition entrants must be enrolled in private music classes at their college. Music Theater Performance Competition entrants must be enrolled in a music theater class or private voice lessons at their college. Ensemble competition entrants must be registered for at least one credit hour in a Music Performance (MUP) or Music Theory (MTC) Course during the spring 2008 semester at any of the Maricopa Community Colleges. Prior First Place competition winners in the solo categories are not eligible to participate in the same solo category again.
GENERAL COMPETITION RULES
(See also additional instructions under specific category):
- Only complete, word-processed applications, signed by your music instructor, will be accepted.
- All titles, composers, and estimated performance time(s) of the piece(s) to be performed must be identified on the application.
- Requests for specific performance time slots (within the category schedule) that are due to special circumstances will be accommodated, if possible. All requests must be made upon submission of the application in the space indicated on the application form. Your music instructor must initial the request. No other special requests will be taken.
- All performances for a particular category must occur within the time scheduled for that category.
- Providing accompanist(s) is the responsibility of the entrants. The accompanist may NOT be the entrant’s instructor, and must be identified on the application at the time of submission.
- Performance time limits will be enforced.
- Only standard, published repertoire may be performed. Students may perform their own compositions in the Composition Category only.
- Appropriate competition dress is required. No jeans, shorts, tee shirts will be allowed. Please address any questions regarding appropriate attire for your category to your instructor.
- Only competitors in this event will be heard and evaluated by the judges.
- There must be 3 or more entries competing in a category in order for the competition to be held in that category.
- All decisions made by the judges are final, and will be announced at the competition site as soon as possible following the compilation of results for each category.
- First Place winners will be invited to perform in the 2008 Artists of Promise event to be held April 14 (rehearsal) and April 15 (performance). Appearance at rehearsal preceding the event is mandatory for all Artist of Promise performers. Please continue checking http://arts.maricopa.edu/music for updated event information.
- Participation for individuals is limited to:
- 2 ensembles and/or
- 2 solos performed in different instrumental/vocal categories
HOW TO APPLY:
1. Complete the application.
- It is available at http://arts.maricopa.edu/music to complete on-line, or download to a computer for completion.
- Provide all requested information.
- Indicate on the application in the provided space, if you have special circumstances and need to request a particular competition time (within the times allotted for your category). Your instructor must initial by your request in order for the request to be considered.
- Print your completed application. (Before you hit the print button, be sure your application is complete.)
- Give your application to your Music Theory/Music Performance instructor to sign and to provide his/her contact information on the application form.
- Incomplete, unsigned, and/or handwritten applications will be rejected.
2. Turn in the completed application to your college’s Music Coordinator (see the list below)
by the following due dates:
- All applications except Composition: Noon, Monday, February 4, 2008
- Composition applications: Noon, Friday, February 15, 2008

ARTISTS OF PROMISE PERFORMANCE EVENT:
All awards will be presented at the Artists of Promise event, to be held at the Orpheum Theater on Tuesday evening, April 15, 2008 .
All Chancellor’s Awards Recipients will be asked to perform in the Artists of Promise event. In order to perform in this event, attendance will be required at the event rehearsal, scheduled for Monday, April 14, 2008 .
- Event performers may be asked to perform selections different from those used for competition.
- The winner in the Composition category must provide his/her own performer(s) and/or electronic instruments(s).
- Appropriate performance attire is required at rehearsal and performance.
SPECIFIC CATEGORY COMPETITION INFORMATION
CATEGORIES: INSTRUMENTAL, PIANO, GUITAR, AND CHAMBER INSTRUMENTAL
Competition Dates and Times: Friday, February 29, 2008 , from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

- Appropriate dress for competition is required.
- Check-in rooms and individual competition times will be announced.
- Check-in at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled performance time.
- Arrive early to ensure use of practice room.
INSTRUMENTAL SOLO (woodwind, brass, strings, percussion)
- Maximum of 8 minutes; one movement from sonata or concerto will be allowed with proper musical editorial cuts of introduction, interludes and coda.
Bring one original and three unmarked copies of your music.
GUITAR SOLO
- Performance from memory only
- Bring an unmarked original and one copy of your music.
- Work performed must be published repertoire, no original compositions or arrangements
- Maximum of 8 minutes; one or two selections allowed; no concertos.
PIANO SOLO
- Performance from memory only
- Bring an unmarked original and one copy of your music.
- Maximum of 12 minutes
- One or two solo selections allowed; no concertos.
INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE
- Bring one original and two unmarked copies of your music.
- An ensemble of two to nine members may be formed for the sole purpose of this competition.
- Maximum of 8 minutes; one movement from sonata or concerto will be allowed with proper musical editorial cuts of introduction, interludes, and coda.
- All participants in the performance will be judged as members of the ensemble, and must therefore be students. There are no accompanists in this category.
Categories: Vocal SOLO and INDIVIDUAL MUSIC THEATER PERFORMANCE

VOCAL SOLO(Male and Female)
- Performance from memory only.
- Bring one original and three unmarked copies of your music.
- Maximum of 8 minutes allowed.
- Three contrasting selections will be allowed.
- Vocal instructors may NOT accompany their own students.
INDIVIDUAL MUSIC THEATER PERFORMANCE (Male and Female)
- Performance from memory only.
- Bring one original and three unmarked copies of your music.
- Maximum of 8 minutes allowed.
- Two contrasting selections will be allowed.
- Vocal instructors may NOT accompany their own students.
CATEGORY: COMPOSITION
- Application and entry is due to the Music Coordinator by noon on Friday, February 15, 2008.
- Piece must be an original composition for acoustic and/or electronic instrument(s).
- An audio or midi CD recording of the composition must be submitted with the application.
- CD recording will not be returned.
- Students must be enrolled in any MTC prefix class (music theory/composition).
- Students may submit only one entry.
- Length of the composition must not exceed a performance time of 8 minutes.
- A computer-generated score is required (no handwritten scores will be accepted.)
- Electronic compositions without a score must substitute a word-processed, double-spaced, narrative explaining the compositional process (no more than two pages) in lieu of the score.
- Improvisational compositions will not be accepted.
- First place winner will need to provide performer(s) and/or electronic instrument(s) for concert event.
