Creative Writing Competition: Call for Entries
The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) announces the Creative Writing Competition for 2008-09. The four categories are poetry, fiction, essay, and one-act play/script.
General Eligibility
1. A contestant must be a currently enrolled "for credit" student at one of the Maricopa Community Colleges
(ALL FACULTY EXCLUDED). Entries must be works written during the students' enrollment in credit courses at an MCCCD college.
2. Students who have won First Place in a category are not eligible to participate again in that category. Entries must be received by the individual college Creative Writing Coordinator listed on the front of this application no later than 12:00 noon on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2008.
3. Only one entry per category may be submitted by an individual. Contestants must include the completed Official Creative Writing Contest 2008-09 entry form with each entry.
4. Entries cannot be works from a previous publication or award winners from previous MCCCD Creative Writing contests. The only exception is a publication directly related to Maricopa County Community College District (i.e., campus newspaper, classroom newsletter, etc).
5. MAXIMUM LENGTH:
• Poetry - 67 lines • Fiction - 3000 words • Essay - 2000 words
• One-Act Play/Script - 3000 words including stage direction and production notes.
6. The upper right corner of each page of the entry must include TITLE OF ENTRY and PAGE NUMBER.
7. Provide a cover page with the entry. The cover page must include AUTHOR’S NAME, HOME ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, and TITLE OF ENTRY.
8. Entries must be submitted in two forms to your college coordinator:
(1) A hard copy, word-processed, using MS Word, 12 point type, double-spaced and submitted on 8 1/2 x 11”
white paper. Poetry entries may be single-spaced.
(2) A file on a 3.5 inch high-density disk or compact disk (CD), with no other files other than the entry.
IMPORTANT to ensure that your entry can be opened for judging review: If using the new Word 2007, “save
as” your document in Word 97-2003, and submit that version of the entry file on the disk/CD.
9. Place both hard copy and disc/CD in an unsealed, 8-1/2”X11” large envelope or pocket folder. The words, “Creative Writing Competition Entry,” AND the category of the entry must be indicated on the front of the envelope or pocket folder. Each envelope or pocket folder may contain only one entry. Entries not submitted as requested will not be accepted.
Judging: The judges will be professionals in the field of creative writing. The decisions of the judges are final.
Awards: Scholarship Awards will be distributed in the following manner for each category:
Poetry, Fiction, Essay, and One-Act Play/Script
First Place (1)* $300 Second Place (1) $200 Third Place (1) $150
Judges may award up to three Honorable Mention scholarships of $100 at their discretion.
*First Place winners, with the exception of Script, will be entered in the national League for Innovation in the Community College’s Student Literary Competition and be required to complete League application materials. The One-Act Play category in the League Competition does not include scripts. The highest evaluated One-Act Play in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place will be submitted to the League for Innovation for judging.
