 Creative Writing Competition (2005-2006)
INTRODUCTION
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 16th annual edition of
Anthology, a collection of the winning entries in the Maricopa Community Colleges
Creative Writing Competition.
The novelist Elmore Leonard says about writing "My most important piece
of advice to all you would-be writers: when you write, try to leave out all the parts
readers skip." Bearing that in mind, let me get to the point quickly before you start
skipping. And the point is: my heartfelt congratulations to all of the students whose
work is contained in this compilation. Thank you for your willingness to share your
time, talents and ideas with us.
Our judges for this competition always face the enormously difficult task of
picking a few to represent the many. My thanks to them also: Constance Alexander,
essay; Billy Gunn, one-act play; Ken Levinson, fiction; and Mark Wunderlich, poetry.
Special thanks for the efforts of our creative writing coordinators for their
support and dedication: Kate Cross, Phoenix College; Sandra Desjardins, Scottsdale
Community College; Betsy Frank, Rio Salado College; Rod Freeman, Estrella Mountain
Community; Casey Furlong, Glendale Community College; Kate Mohler, Mesa Community
College; Teri Moser, Chandler-Gilbert Community College; Lois Roma-Deeley, Paradise
Valley Community College; Jim Smith, South Mountain Community College; and Dean
Stover, GateWay Community College. And my heartiest thanks of all to the staff of
the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI), especially Debbie Fox,
Ruth DeLeon-Martinez, Shelly Laug and Janet Sieradzki.
There. Now you can skip ahead . . . if you haven't already.
