Creative Writing: 2004-2005 Competition Judges

Jan Beatty

POETRY
Jan BeattyÕs new collection of poems, Boneshaker, was published in Spring 2002 by the University of Pittsburgh Press. Her first book, Mad River, won the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize from the University of Pittsburgh Press, and was published in 1995. BeattyÕs chapbook, Ravenous, won the 1995 State Street Chapbook Prize. Other awards include the 1990 Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry and two fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Individual poems have appeared in journals such as Indiana Review, Witness, and Poetry East. Her poetry has also appeared in anthologies published by the University of Illinois Press, Kent State University Press, and the University of Iowa Press. For the past ten years, Beatty has hosted and produced Prosody, a public radio show on NPR affiliate WYEP-FM, featuring the work of national writers.

Philip Cioffari

ONE-ACT PLAY
Philip Cioffari teaches in the Creative Writing Program at William Patterson University in New Jersey, where he is a Professor of English and Coordinator of the Performing and Literary Arts Honors Program. His plays have been performed in playhouses in New York City including the Belmont Playhouse, Chelsea Playhouse, American Globe Theatre, American Theatre of Actors, Pulse Ensemble Theatre, HB Studio, and in New Jersey at the New Jersey PlaywrightÕs Festival.

Marsh Muirhead

SHORT STORY
Marsh Muirhead is a freelance writer who lives and works in Bemidji, Minnesota. He holds degrees in both psychology and dentistry from the University of Minnesota and a M.A. in English from Bemidji State University. His fiction has appeared in various publications, including The Carolina Quarterly, The Quarterly, and the North Dakota Quarterly. His articles, reviews and commentaries have appeared in numerous magazines and have been broadcast on KCRB, the local pubic radio station. Dr. Muirhead is a commercial pilot and flight instructor. His photographs and feature articles have been published in AOPA Pilot.

G. Lynn Nelson

PERSONAL ESSAY
G. Lynn Nelson, Ph.D., is a Professor in the English Department at Arizona State University, where he created and teaches a class called, Writing and Being, upon which his recent book is based. Nelson is the Director of the Greater Phoenix Area Writing Project, which is part of the National Writing Project. This program brings together writing teachers from K thru Community College to work on their own writing, and to share effective methods of teaching writing to others. Nelson created and directs the Rainbow Section of First Year Composition for Native American students at ASU. He is also founder and director of Native Images, an advanced writing and community outreach group for Native Americans. In addition to his book, Writing and Being: Taking Back Our Lives Through the Power of Language, Nelson has written many articles about teaching, writing, and the human spirit.
