The Maricopa Community Colleges District, in collaboration with Paradise Valley Community College and the prestigious East-West Center's Asian Studies Development Program in Honolulu, is pleased to offer our learning community this opportunity for professional growth and global engagement. This three-day series is the initial part of a long-term relationship with the East-West Center that will provide a more comprehensive look at Asian culture and society.
The Spring semester program will serve as an introduction to Asian studies for MCCCD faculty and will help facilitate future joint activities between the Maricopa Community Colleges and the East-West CenterŐs Asian Studies Development Program. These activities will include more in-depth study of the region and a future field study/curriculum development program in Asia.
This three-day series, already approved for 13.5 hours of Professional Growth Credit, will set the tone for these future programs. We invite you to participate in this series and to benefit from the presentations from key experts in the field of Asian Studies.
Objectives of This Series
- To develop an historic and contemporary awareness of East Asia;
- To better understand the distinct identity within Asia;
- To gain a context for the circumstances causing the conflicts and struggles as the region seeks modernization;
- To acquire an improved understanding of the relationship between East Asia and the Western world;
- To develop a curriculum module proposal from the information, knowledge, resources, and materials accessed through the series.
Suggested Reading
For each of the sessions, there will be 3-4 articles for the participants
to read. These will be announced and distributed by speakers prior to
the discu discussion ssion sessions. We will also make suggestions of literature
of interest such as the following:
- "Confucian Order," in From Africa to Zen: An Invitation to World Philosophy (ed. Robert C. Solomon and Kathleen M. Higgins) Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2nd edition (August, 2003).
- "Introduction" in Focusing the Familiar: A Translation and Philosophical Interpretation of the Zhongyong, Roger T. Ames and David L. Hall, University of Hawaii Press (2001).
- Godzilla on My Mind: Fifty Years of the King of Monsters, by William M. Tsutsui, Palgrave Macmillan Publishers (October, 2004).
