The students we serve have become more diverse in both ethnicity and distributed learning styles. One growing segment of this population is students with disabilities. Assistive technology provides many more students with disabilities the opportunity to actively participate in teaching and learning at Maricopa
The Maricopa Disability Resource Council, working in conjunction with Sharon Blanton, Associate Dean of Technology at Scottsdale Community College, formulated a plan with funding to update/add assistive technology across Maricopa. Equipment and software were purchased for all colleges and distributed in 2002. In addition, training was provided for college disability services staff.
Teaching and learning support for students with disabilities has traditionally the role of student services. The funding above provided the hardware and software necessary for disabled students to succeed with technical methodologies now used for course delivery. However, faculty need the opportunity to learn not only about these technologies, but also effective strategies to facilitate the classroom experience for disabled students.
This dialogue day is meant to increase awareness among faculty and staff of both the technologies and strategies available for supporting students with disabilities.
