Civic Responsibility: From Awareness to Commitment
April 30, 2004
Chandler-Gilbert Community College
SC140 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.
Lunch will be provided.
What is the role of civic responsibility in our classroom and in the lives of our students? The American Association of Community Colleges' civic responsibility initiative counters what is known as "civic disengagement" and provides a way for community colleges to establish a value of good citizenry across the continuum from educational institution to community. Many MCCCD faculty are using civic responsibility as a part of instruction to help students learn as they increase their awareness of issues, gather meaningful information, and explore ways to take action.
This interactive dialog day is designed for faculty with any interest or involvement with civic responsibility.
- You may have heard the label and want to know more about it
- You may have tried something and now are looking for a way to do it better
- Perhaps you are unsure of how to progress further than you are now
- Or you might just want to test out a new idea
At this dialog day, you will talk with faculty, community members, and students who are currently involved with civic responsibility as a part of instruction, discussing what has worked as well as obstacles they have experienced. To get a feel for how civic responsibility can be a part of instruction, you will participate in a whole-group civic responsibility activity.
Join us as we become more aware, gather information, and act to increase civic responsibility through our instruction.
