Islamism from Hasan al-Bana to Bin Laden: An Overview
Abdullahi A. Gallab, Ph.D.
Dr. Abdullahi A. Gallab is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and an affiliate of the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict at Arizona State University. He is also a faculty affiliate of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Gallab is originally from Sudan and worked for the Sudanese government from 1981-1989.
Dr. Gallab has lectured on many issues related to Islam, including: “Is Islam Compatible with Democracy?” -- “The Quran in Muslim Everyday Life” and “Islamic Traditions.”
He has published numerous books, chapters, and articles, including “Islam and Western Culture: Navigating Across Terra Incognita,” – “The Insecure Rendezvous Between Islam and Totalitarianism: The Failure of the Islamists State in the Sudan,” and currently in progress is “The Global Jihadists” a study of global Jihad through the life and works of some of it principal theorists and actors.
Dr. Gallab received his Bachelor’s of Science from Boston University and his Masters and Doctorate from Brigham Young University. He has taught a variety of subjects ranging from Comparative Media Systems to the Voices, Politics and Societies of Islam in Africa.
Political Islam in Morocco
Dr. Khalid Chegraoui
Dr. Khalid Chegraoui is a Professor of History and Political Anthropology at the Institute of African Studies at Mohammed V University (Souissi), in Rabat, Morocco. As an educator, researcher and historian, Dr. Chegraoui has served in the Department of History at the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences at Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University, in Fez, Morocco; as a member of the Board of the Moroccan Association of History; and as a dynamic member of the Council for the Development of Social Science and Research in Africa. Dr. Chegraoui has conducted research on the History and Political Anthropology in Northwest and Sub-Saharan Africa, and Political Islam. Currently he is coordinating a research group on the topic of: Africa: Geostratic Space and Civilization.
Recently published articles include: State and Islam in West Africa (in French); Trade Routes: Trans-Saharan Caravan Enters the Maghreb and Sudan (in Arabic); Ottomans in Traditional Moroccan Historiography (in Arabic); The Voyage of El-Hadjj Umar in the Middle East or The Search of Political Power; and Ideology, Religion and Ethnocentrism in the Maghreb.
Dr. Chegraoui received his doctorate in History at Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco.

This MCLI Dialogue Day will build upon a foundation of previous MCCCD programs and activities held in recent years that have enhanced the awarenss of Islam and the Muslim world within the Maricopa Communit Colleges.
We invite you to participate in this series and to benefit from the presentations from key experts in the field of Islamic Studies. An application for 4.5 hours of Faculty Professional Growth credit is pending approval. You must attend the entire day to receive credit.
