Internationally-known expert on
Electronic Portfolio Development
for learners of all ages
Goals
Our goals are to help faculty become comfortable with, and knowledgeable about, using ePortfolios for themselves and with their students by:
- Initiating district-wide discussion on how and why ePortfolios should and could be used in a variety of disciplines and applications (FEP, showcase, student/program assessment, etc.).
- Offering the knowledge and experience of faculty and students who have designed, developed and/or used different forms of ePortfolios.
- Encouraging individual faculty from all disciplines to consider, design, develop, and use professionally or pedagogically sound ePortfolios.
Overview
In recent years, Electronic Portfolios are an increasing topic of research and exploration at a national/international level, as well as here at Maricopa. An Electronic Portfolios Dialogue Day held October 2002 garnered much interest in the topic, but may have put the technology cart before the horse. Since that time, a number of groups and individuals in Maricopa have become more involved with ePortfolios (a widely used technology at Chandler-Gilbert, they are being used more by Teacher Education programs, growing interest in art programs to provide showcases for student work). This day we hope to initiate deeper interest in ePortfolios by addressing the pedagogical benefits and the issues of motivation for both faculty and students.
If we are to help learners create portfolios that truly support Assessment For Learning (AFL) and follow the ten AFL principles, then we need to look at strategies that help learners find their own voice and to tell the story of their own learning... strategies that foster learner self-motivation.
This day will begin with a presentation by Dr. Barrett that will showcase the concepts of Electronic Portfolios by linking two dynamic processes to promote deep learning: Portfolio Development and Digital Storytelling.
A major challenge today with electronic portfolios is to maintain learner intrinisic motivation to willingly engage in the portfolio process. The use of multimedia tools is one strategy that involves and engages learners; another technology that is engaging young people today is the weblog (blogs) and wikis. Participants will see demonstrations of electronic portfolios as digital stories, formative assessment, and support for lifelong learning and professional development.
A panel of students who are currently developing electronic portfolios within the Maricopa system will share their experiences and impressions about using electronic portfolios.
A portfolio has a potential to support the reflective process, but learners need guidance from faculty experienced in this type of learning... and who can model their own portfolios and folio thinking with their students!
Before we can ask students to effectively use portfolios to support this type of learning, we need to get faculty engaged in creating their own portfolios. In the afternoon, Dr. Barrett will lead a workshop for faculty who want to begin building their own electronic portfolios. Bring a recent Vita to the workshop, and be prepared to begin outlining the contents for your own professional eportfolio.
