Charles Hopkins
UNESCO Chair, York University (Toronto)
In this morning gathering, faculty, administrators, and staff will focus on global sustainability. Central to our global thinking discussion and hands on work on our courses and disciplines will be the question: What should our students know, be able to do, and value when they graduate? As we work to infuse discussion of sustainability into our classes, we should be aware that no single discipline/group/teacher can do it all; every discipline/group/teacher can contribute something.
Keynote
The day will begin with Charles Hopkins who will present an overview of current developments in globalization. He will then describe possible visions for obtaining a sustainable future, and finally talk about what people in higher education might be able to help students think globally and to consider issues of sustainability.
Café Conversations
We will follow the presentation with a series of café conversations in which we will
- explore questions related to globalization and sustainability,
- explore general ideas about how to integrate the idea of sustainability into the curriculum: right now (this semester), in our courses in future semesters, and through new courses.
Cluster Breakouts
We will take some of the key ideas of the café conversations to help us as we cluster by disciplines or similar curricula and talk about specific ways to reorient our own courses and disciplines to better address issues of sustainable development.
