Teaching in the cyberspace classroom requires that we develop practices that are more facilitative. Additionally, attention needs to be paid to the development of a sense of community among participants in order for the learning process to be successful. Web enhancement of courses, or the use of the Internet to supplement or support face-to-face teaching (also known as hybrid courses), has been shown to be one of the most effective ways of teaching and learning.
This workshop offers a successful framework for online distance education involving the development of a learning community along with suggestions to enable faculty to organize online and hybrid courses in such a way so that learners can take charge of the learning process. Come and learn about such topics such as the development of guidelines and a syllabus for the class, managing discussion, dealing with participation, the various ways that web-enhancement can be used, and evaluating student progress. Bring your questions regarding online course development and your ideas for developing and designing your first online or hybrid course.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Develop learning objectives that lend themselves to hybrid teaching
- Develop teaching strategies using technology that will enhance face-to-face teaching
- Identify the differences between strategies that work well face-to-face, in a hybrid environment, and online
- Develop strategies that are interactive and that will engage learners in the learning process online or in the hybrid environment
- Implement initial ideas for course development that will transfer successfully to the online environment
Activities Used to Achieve Objectives:
- Lecture/discussion
- Demonstration of online and hybrid classes
- Small group discussion
- Final reflections paper of key learning for the day
