Learning Democracy in Mexico:
Origins, Expectations and Consequences
Roderick Camp
Roderick Camp is a faculty member of the Government Department of Claremont McKenna College where he has been teaching since 1998. Previously Camp taught eight years at Tulane University and also served as a visiting professor at Colegio de Mexico and the Foreign Service Institute. Camp has done research work at the Woodrow Wilson Centre for International Scholars Smithsonian Institution and has received a Fulbright Fellowship on three occasions, as well as a Howard Heinz Foundation Fellowship for research on Mexico. Camp is a contributing editor to the Library of Congress, Handbook of Latin American Studies and a frequent consultant to national and international media, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Ntional Public Radio, and BBC.
Camp has authored numerous articles and twenty books on Mexico. A few of his most recent publications include: Politics in Mexico, The Democratic Transformation; Mexico's Mandarins, Crafting a Power Elite for the 21st Century; and Crossing Swords, Politics and Religion in Mexico. Camp received his Ph.D. in Comparative Politics and History from the University of Arizona.
Economic Issues in Latin America
and the Chilean Experience
Alex Foxley
Alex Foxley is the Executive Director for Chile and Ecuador at the Inter-American Investment Corporation and also the Alternate Executive Director for Chile and Peru at the Inter-American Development Bank. Between 2004 and 2006, Foxley was the Economic and Trade Counselor at the Embassy of Chile in Washington D.C. Among his responsibilities were the implementation of the Chile-United States Free Trade Agreement (Chile-US FTA) and the design and execution of Chile's export promotion strategy for the Mid-Atlantic region. Foxley also worked at the Chilean Embassy as an advisor for the Chile-US FTA. As part of the negotiating team, he helped design the communication's strategy used by the Chilean Embassy to do outreach in relation to FTA. Prior to his work at the Embassy, Foxley moved to Chile to work in the successful 1999 presidential campaign of Ricardo Lagos.
In the late 80's, Foxley worked in Chile's Instituto Latioamercano de Estudios Transnacionales, where he conducted research on Chilean politics. He also participated in the creation of the Concertacion de Partidos por la Democracia, the coalition that has ruled Chile since its return to democracy in 1990. Foxley received his M.A. in Political Science from Georgetown University.
