Instructional Goal
This hands-on, interactive workshop will
- introduce participants to many aspects of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in higher education
- provide an opportunity to discuss ideas for SoTL projects
Rationale
We are bringing an expert in SoTL research to provide participants with materials and information related to the following topics: understanding the meanings of SoTL and its importance for improving teaching and learning, conceptualizing a teaching-learning problem to be studied, integrating SoTL into existing teaching practices and connecting SoTL to classroom assessment and research, choosing appropriate methodologies, considering ethical issues, finding presentation and publication outlets, documenting SoTL work, and applying what is learned to improve teaching and learning.
Agenda
1:00 to 1:30 Introductions, hands-on task and discussion of the meaning of SoTL and related terms.
1:30 to 1:50 Teamwork and discussion on possible SoTL project questions or topics, sharing ideas, fit with existing work.
1:50 to 2:30 Overview of ethical issues and methodologies.
2:30 to 2:45 Break
2:45 to 3:15 Information and suggestions for making SoTL work public.
3:15 to 3:45 Presentation and discussion of application of SoTL results to improve student learning.
3:45 to 4:00 Final questions
About the speaker...
Dr. Kathleen McKinney
Dr. Kathleen McKinney received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982. Currently, she is Professor of Sociology at Illinois State University. In addition, she serves as the K. Patricia Cross Chair in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), a university-wide endowed chair reporting to the Office of the Provost. From 1996 to 2002, she held the administrative position of Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at Illinois State University, where she supervised the Center staff as well as the University Assessment Office.
McKinney is a social psychologist with interests in relationships, sexuality, sexual harassment, higher education, and college teaching. McKinney has numerous scholarly publications including several co-authored and edited books, and dozens of refereed articles mostly in the areas of sexual harassment, pedagogy, and close relationships. Her most recent book is a practical guide to doing SoTL due out in 2007 by Anker Publishing. She served three years as editor of Teaching Sociology, the refereed, national journal of the American Sociological Association (ASA). She is also a member of the ASA Department Resources Group, a group of about 60 sociologists who assist their colleagues around the nation conducting teaching workshops and program reviews, and writing teaching materials. She was also a co-author of the 2004 ASA task force report on the undergraduate major and is active in the ASA Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology. McKinney has given many SoTL workshops around the United States.
McKinney is involved in the SoTL movement at the national and international levels, working with the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Campus Program, being involved in SoTL initiatives within the American Association of Higher Education (Cluster Leader) before it closed, and as a founding member of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (IS-SoTL). McKinney was a 2003-2004 Carnegie Scholar and has received several teaching awards including Illinois State University's College of Arts and Sciences Junior and Senior Distinguished Teacher, Illinois State University Outstanding University Teacher, the ASA Hans Mauksch award for contributions to undergraduate education, and the ASA Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award.
