Debra Rowe, Ph.D.
U.S. Partnership for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development University Leaders for a Sustainable Future
Come hear Debra Rowe, Co-chair Higher Education and Marketing, U.S. Partnership for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and Senior Fellow, University Leaders for a Sustainable Future talk on Education for Global Sustainability. She will be discussing the AACC resolution on sustainability. She will be sharing resources on sustainability to enhance learning.
The U.S. has approximately 5% of the world's population and is consuming about 25% of the world's resources. As other countries emulate the U.S., our shared future both locally and globally is increasingly unsustainable. Many more employers are incorporating sustainable practices as smart business, and are looking for graduates literate in our societal sustainability challenges. Technical, business and liberal arts programs are increasingly including content in their curricula to help students become engaged in sustainability issues and solutions. Sustainable design and operations is becoming the new norm for professionals in the field. All consumers, workers and community members have an important role to play in creating a sustainable future, which means simultaneously producing healthy economies, communities and ecosystems. All disciplines benefit from incorporating this updated world view into their learning activities.
The speaker, Dr. Rowe will talk about resources available to all college staff and faculty and ways to enhance operations, learning, student life and community partnerships at Maricopa. She will also be discussing green buildings and how to build them for less. She will be giving tips on reducing energy costs and pollution by making both small and large changes. She will be discussing the impact that building design has on the learning and the physical environment and alternative strategies for reducing that impact. All college staff and faculty are encouraged to attend.
