About the speaker...
Dr. Virginia Draper
Lecturer, Writing Program & former Coordinator, Writing Across the Curriculum, University of California, Santa Cruz. Fellow, Central California Writing Project.
I have an M.A. in English Literature and a Ph.D. in Education from University of California, Berkeley. For nineteen years I taught in the Writing Program at University of California, Santa Cruz and coordinated the Writing Across the Curriculum Program, as well as the mentor program for graduate students. At present, I work part-time at UC Santa Cruz, co-teaching a course that prepares graduate students to teach first year writing and doing research on undergraduate writing in the physical and biological sciences. ÊI consult with schools and colleges on writing (and sometimes reading) across the curriculum. ÊLast year I spent a couple of weeks in a secondary school in ÊMtera, Tanzania with Global Volunteers, where I did some demonstration lessons on writing for English and Civics teachers and worked informally with students on conversational English.
Publications include Writing & Learning A Handbook for UCSC Faculty (UCSC, 1992). ÊI have done presentations and workshops at several conferences: College Composition and Communication, NCTE, and California Writing Project.
I live about 6 blocks from the Pacific Ocean and enjoy walking along the cliff. I also draw and paint, and enjoy doing improv. I've recently become interested in Buddhism and Buddhist psychology.
