WebDev 2001 Technology Dialogue Day
| title | Maricopa Learning eXchange (MLX)
| | presentation type | Poster Session | | site represented | District Office
| | session description | The MLX is a virtual warehouse of ideas, examples, and resources (represented as nebulous brown "packages") about learning at the Maricopa Community Colleges. Just as learning is a concept that defies quantifying, so are examples of learning. That is why we represent them as mysterious wrapped packages, as the examples range from something as small as a spreadsheet activity designed for a chemistry lab exercise to a complete program such as the Multiple Intelligences Institute. It is anything created for or applied to context of student learning.
The MLX is open to anyone from Maricopa to create their own package, which is described via a "packing slip" (see exmaple below), and includes features to provide "supplements" or attachments, any computer document file, spreadsheet, powerpoint, image, movie, etc, that the creators wish to share.
The MLX features an easy to use search screen, a "loading Dock" area where you can manage your packages, and presents dynamic information via a combination of a mySQL database backend and PHP integration into the web page.

| | fit with theme | The idea for MLX came from a large volume of faculty input to the "learning@maricopa.edu" project starting back in 1997, and is a response to the continued request for a database of "Who's doing What" at Maricopa. The idea of an "exchange" is that people would participate by both putting in and taking out. The conceptualization was done via a series of brainstorming sessions with different groups (faculty developers, Ocotillo), and prototyped in 2000. The behind the scenes work was done by programming staff at MCLI.
