You can use the paste approach but first I'd use ResEdit to create a complete set of icons with all sizes masks etc. Then set all icon id's to -16455 (I think that's the correct ID) and turn on the custom icon bit.

Once that is done you can simply copy and paste the icon from the finder's get info and all associated masks and icon sizes will copy with it.

If you skip this approach and simply paste an 8-bit icon alone into the get info then the finder will create small versions and masks on the fly but they will not look very good.
