Here is how I installed Windows 95 from the CD onto my 6100/66 DOS machine.
By using these steps (which took me 2 days of trial and error to figure
out) I have been able to successfully load Win95 and run it crash free
since Aug. 25th. I have also been able to join the Microsoft Network and
use the Microsoft Browser to surf the Internet. I use this Mac for cross
platform Multimedia development and programming.
My DOS card has 8 meg of RAM installed on it. I do not think you can
install Win95 unless you have at least an 8 meg SIMM on the DOS card.
You will need the original DOS and Windows setup disks that came with your
6100/66 as well as the DOS Compatibility Card Installer Disk (for DOS
environment). You should be using the latest PC Setup 1.07. Items in []
below are menu items.
- Create a [New Drive File] for drive C: in the PC Setup Control Panel.
Make sure you Check the [Initialize Drive File].
- Set the D: drive in the PC Setup Control Panel to what you were using as
your old C: drive file using the [Other Drive File]. If you have a modem,
set [COM2] to [Modem Port] and [COM1] to [None] and turn your modem on.
Remove any Sharing Drives by selecting them and clicking OK in the Are You
Sure pop up. Set Sound to [Enabled].
- Start and switch to the PC.
- Insert the Microsoft MS-DOS Setup Disk #1 into the drive. At the Main
Menu press F3 and quit the installer.
- At the DOS prompt switch to A: and type: format c: then press RETURN.
- After the C: Drive has been formatted and you are back to the A: prompt,
type:setup
then press RETURN.
- Install DOS to the C: drive.
- After the automatic restart at the end of the DOS installation you will
be presented with the C: prompt. Insert the DOS Compatibility Card
Installer Disk (for DOS environment) and type:
A:\install
then press RETURN.
- At the following prompts type the answers provided> Proceed with
installation of DOS-only files? (Y/N) : Y, Install Macintosh/PC folder
sharing? (Y/N): Y, Install CDROM software? (Y/N): Y, Install
Macintosh/DOS Copy & Paste? (Y/N): N. !!WARNING!! (This last item does not
work properly with Win95, do not install it!)
- Restart the PC and put the Win95 CD in the CD drive.
- Type: D:\WIN95\SETUP then press RETURN.
- Install Win95. At some point you will be asked to insert your Windows
3.1 install disk #1 if you are installing the upgrade version of Win95.
This is normal. !!WARNING!! If presented with a Checkbox that says
"Network" DO NOT CHECK IT! Leave it off
- !!WARNING!! During the install process, do not install any of the Bonus
sound packs such as Jungle as they will cause a lock up if used.
- Do not install any Printers or Modems at this time.
- When you finally see the Win95 Desktop (it takes about 30 min.) take a
break, you are about 1/3 there.
- Select the Start Button and select Settings/Control Panels.
- Insert the Display Drivers Disk #1 that came with your 6100 into the
floppy drive.

button in the main window.
- Click [Next].
- Click [Finish].
- Press any key to continue. Press ENTER to select the Windows Version
3.1. Press ENTER to toggle [All Resolutions] to on. Press END to install.
Enter the path to Windows. (the default of C:\WINDOWS is correct). After
the installer has finished, press any key to continue and then press ESC to
quit.
- Back at the Control Panel window, double click on the [Display] icon.
- Click on the [Settings] tab at the top of the window.

about Monitor Type.

- Copy any files you wish from the D: drive to the C: drive is needed.
!!WARNING!! Do not copy any files in the old DOS or Windows directory to
the new ones.
Congratulations. Have a beer and send me one. Or at least send e-mail.
Some notes:
If you want to boot Win 3.1 or DOS just switch The drives in the PC Setup
Control panel.
The Mac will Lockup if you try to access the modem port on the Mac side
while a modem is mapped to COM2 in PC Setup. I leave COM2 set to NONE
unless I am going to use the modem on the PC side. You do not need to
restart or anything if you change the COM2 setting in PC Setup.
Happy Computing ;-)
