Learning Session Descriptions

Going Beyond Talking: How the Maricopa Community College System is Being Transformed to Focus on Learning as the Core Value
In this session, the ACE Learning Initiative Team will report on current efforts to transform the system to focus on learning. Team members and participants will also identify how they can contribute to this systemic transformation.

Internationalizing the Curriculum: Show and Tell
Faculty will give a brief presentation of their curriculum projects and the WebSite materials followed by a "conversation with colleagues" on the "whys," "hows," and specifics of the project and the courses.

The Learning Community: Focus on Students
What forms of community best serve the mission of the college -- and the needs of those who pursue the mission? Continued conversation with Parker Palmer.

Learning, the Active Ingredient that Fuels Economic Prosperity
An engaging, moderated group discussion on the importance of learning as it applies to the topics of workforce preparation, global competetiveness, and economic development. What is the role of MCCD faculty today? What can it be tomorrow?

The Maricopa Health Care System (HCIES) A Unique Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching and Learning
The Maricopa Health Care Faculty will review and discuss the new HCIES educational pathways, the curriculum and content, and the influence it will have on faculty and student learning.

Ocotillo: Assessment and Evaluation of Technology
In this session, Ocotillo college faculty chairs Pat Medeiros (SCC) and Peter Thiel (PVCC) will lead a discussion leading to effective and useful means that we might use to grapple with assessment and evaluation of technology. Are there adequate models of cost/benefit analyses? What data is easy enough to acquire and also useful enough to evaluate? Can we develop useful measures of technology usage, ones that meet the End statements for student learning?

On Being a Reflective Practitioner: The Art and Science of Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology (SMET) Teaching
What does it mean to be a reflective teacher? And how would it change what we do in the classroom? In this session we will discuss several issues such as: 'What is my job as a teacher?' 'What do I expect of my students?' 'What do I know about my students?' and 'How do I know when I have succeeded?'

Sharing the Wealth: Applying Multiple Intelligences and Creativity within Disciplines
As education moves in the direction of providing more thematic, constructive, hands-on, and interactive activities in all content areas, great care must be taken to address the needs of ALL learners. Methodologies should be implemented that reach all students and honor their learning diversity. In this session, a multimedia preview of students' creative work, student comments and evaluation will be presented.

What's Shakin' & Bakin' Outside the Classroom When It Comes to Learning
Results from district-wide student focus groups about learning outside the classroom will be shared. Also, two colleges will highlight the marriage of student development services and instruction through their exemplar programs: CGCC on service learning and RSC on distance learning. Participants will then be engaged in a dialogue on collaboration of student development services and instruction to provide a wholistic view of learning.

Wrestling with Outcomes . . . Don't Go Down for the Count
This session provides faculty an opportunity to share information about what really works in implementing outcomes assessment. Dialogue will not only focus on best practices, faculty development efforts, implications of assessment results on college improvement, but also on critical issues surrounding outcomes assessment that still need to be addressed.
