Engagement Through Learning Communities

This presentation focuses on how learning communities at Collin County Community College establish interdisciplinary, topical, and thematic approaches to learning into the curriculum. This session will provide an interactive discussion of how to develop and implement successful learning communities on college campuses. Pedogogical issues, delivery methods, successful recruitment and marketing strategies, faculty development, and methods of assessment will be addressed. It will also focus on methods to enhance learning communities by integrating technology, critical thinking assignments, service learning and field research into the curriculum. Comparative retention rates, GPA, and student success findings will be presented. Session participants will be handed information on the marketing of learning communities, the creation of combined syllabi, as well as examples of learning community assignments.
