I am reluctant to send AllA1 messages knowing the ease at wich the fingers reach for the delete key, but since sending information about MCLI's WWW list, we heard from some 150 people. That says something about this web stuff. Attached is some information for those just added to the list. If you are attending Friday's all faculty convocation, stop by and visit us in the room for the Grants Showcase. NetScape Navigator is now up to version 2.05b. We have copies both mac and windows on the MCLI Public file server. I've never seen their ftp site so busy to access; I actually downloaded the mac version from a site in Japan and the transmission took some 3.5 hours. Acronym Soup Ken Roberts (SMCC) asked about sites that contained information to help understand all the different acronymns etc for file types he was encountering. I dont know what he found, but here were some of my recommendations: Macromedia's Multimedia and Design Terms and Acronyms http://www.macromedia.com/Brain/Survival/acronyms.html Multimedia Glossary http://alpha.acast.nova.edu/~gunterm/gloss.htm Cross Platform Page http://www.mps.org/~ebennett/xplat/xplat.html Multimedia File Formats on the Internet http://ac.dal.ca/~dong/contents.html Yahoo http://www.yahoo.com/Computers/Multimedia Searchin' and Searchin' Those three W's are too big just to browse all the time. The race is on among sites that have set up Web-Wide searches- each claming to be the biggest and deepest and most numerous. I have been most impressed with: Excite http://www.excite.com/ Not only doe sit have flexible searches, but each result comes with a button that will re-submit the search dor similar items. Altavista http://altavista.digital.com/ They also claim largest status Remember that searching is often a shotgun approach. Learn how to use the different options for constructing logical searches (i.e. all pages that contain "alan levine" but do not contain "arizona". It's also fun to search on your name- if perhaps we mentioned you in one of MCLI's publications, you might come up in these databases. NetScape Mania Have you found the bonus menus hidden by the mouse in the NetScape? Clicking in a web page, on the Mac hold down the mouse button and on windows/unix hold down the right mouse button, and a popup menu appears. There are more features for navigating between pages, saving inline images to your computer, copying inline images to your scrapbook. Also, if you have encountered NetScape pages that are set up with FRAMES (divisions of the web page), this special menu lets you navigate between previously viewed frames (if you have ever clicked the back button expecting to see the previous frame, you may understand what I am getting at). How about drag and drop? In Netscape Mac (and system 7.5) and NetScape on Windows95 (not sure yet on Windows 3.1) you can hold the mouse down on any hypertext item and drag it to your desktop. This copies the HTML source code to your computer. It also means you can jump right to that page by double clicking the icon on your desktop. I've also seen in NetScape for Windows95 that you can drag any hypertext item from one frame and drop it in another. I really do not know why you would want to do such a thing... {-- alan Onto the World Wide Web with MCLI This A1 distribution list is for people interested in new and interesting developments on the Internet. For your information, here are some important points: o The frequency of messages will vary, but probably be less than one per week. o I would prefer not getting many questions about Internet access, problems with software, A1, etc. Your first course of action should be your local computer support staff. I will provide below) some pointers that may be useful. I bet that you can find an answer quicker than I could answer. o We aim not to be too specific towards computer specific issues (no Mac vs Windows battles) o Suggestions, tips, leads are always welcome. No one, not I, cam cover it all. o Please try not to print out these A1s! It's not necessary. File them in your A1 account, use your mouse to copy-paste URLs to your web browser or a text file.
