As a means of making information a little more easy to find, District ITS is creating a searchable directory of all WWW services among the Maricopa Community Colleges. You can search it by going to: http://www.maricopa.edu/search/ Just type some keywords into the field and click the search button. Note that for now, as it is starting out, there are not a huge number of entries. (hint, to see them all, search on "dt" -- HTML writers should understand why when they see the format of the results). A database without data is...... not much! It will only grow if those creating web pages add their information, which can be done from the form at: http://www.maricopa.edu/search/sub_search.html A Regular Dose of New Links The Internet Scout explores new Internet sites. The best things about the Scout are that is includes a brief review written by a person that has explored the site, rather than just surfing by. You can get the information via e-mail fron an Internet listserv or by going to their web page: To receive the electronic mail version of the Scout Report each week, join the scout-report mailing list. This is the only mail you will receive from this list. send email to: listserv@lists.internic.net in the body of the message, type: subscribe scout-report yourfirstname yourlastname The Scout Report's Web page: http://rs.internic.net/scout/report Web Fiction Is it some new (or old?) genre? Two sites I stumbled/bumbled into recently have an online story that sometimes makes you wonder whether it is fact or fiction: Crime Scene Interactive mystery Follow the developments in the murder of Valerie Wilson. See if you can piece together the clues from http://www.quest.net/crime Ferndale "check your secrets at the door" This is an interactive experiment in a mountain retreat. Here, four people will share their problems over the Internet using Net-Therapy. http://www.ferndale.com/ An Essay on Educational Technology The Shroud of Lecturing http://hawk.fab2.albany.edu/delong/shroud.htm is written by Stephen E. DeLong, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs/ Information Systems and Technology, University at Albany/SUNY. Okay, there are no graphic, no backgrounds, no font size changes, but there *is* a discussion and links to examples of the new New new New Media and where it is being used in education. (We will give a a bonus if you can find MCLI in the essay) Electronic News Stands Looking for online magazines? Try: Electronic News Stand http://www.enews.com/ Westworld Magazine Stand http://www.westworld.com/magazine.html Ecola's 24-hour Newsstand http://www.ecola.com/news/ Web Development Cyberbase This is a set of high-end web pages, NetScape frames galore, that is jam packed with web information. It includes sections on HTML, Graphics, CGI, Java, Site Promotion, VRML, Web Design. It employs some Java code to do things such as flashing a different message depended where your mouse is hovering over the page. The site is created by Matt Johnson, a 19 year old student at Hamline University, Minnesota. http://www.hamline.edu/personal/matjohns/webdev/html/ QuickTime Plug-In Apple has not yet released a NetScape plug-in that allows QuickTime movies to be played right in a web page (rather than launching an external helper application). BUT.... someone else has! ViewMovie Plug-in http://www.well.com/user/ivanski/viewmovie/viewmovie.sit.hqx It works fine- anytime you click on a hypertext item linked to a QuickTime movie, it will download it (which still takes a long time!) and play it right in the web page. Once you get the plug-in (a small file)_, just put it in the "Plug-Ins" folder inside the "NetScape" folder on your Macintosh computer. Steve's "Useful" Links Thanks to Steve Ribbing (MCC) who sent us some of his most "useful" web sites: Strunk, William. 1918 The Elements of Style http://www.columbia.edu/acis/bartleby/strunk/ one that anyone who writes anything should read & keep handy NET worth http://networth.galt.com/www/home/networth.html financial info galore...build & track your own portfolios / accurate 15-minute delay market values on issues / etc etc etc (now part of the Quicken Financial network... it's free and GOOD ) FinanCenter Hope Page a wide variety of powerful programs you can use on-line to work out the answers to many personal financial 'what-ifs?' http://www.financenter.com/resources/ The Bandwidth Conservation Society good advise and how-to on reducing the glut and getting the 'mostest with the fewest' (bits) http://www.infohiway.com/faster/index.html Homepage For The Homeless not a socio-political soapbox, but a server that offers FREE parking for your home page ! It's _the_ place to go to get a firm handle on the 'under-the-hood' stuff of and about the Windows 95 OS... though not overly-technical to the point of general uselessness, it's not necessarily going to be Aunt Bea's favorite starting page 8-) http://www.creativelement.com/win95ann/
