Penn State Students Learn Online Aptitude in World Campus 101
=============================================================

| At Penn State University, the Web-based World Campus offers
| online programs to more than 600 students worldwide. By the
| end of its fifth year, World Campus hopes to extend its
| offerings to 25-30 programs of more than 300 courses to
| reach some 10,000 students. But the new literacy of taking
| courses online is a scholarship in itself, so the site also
| offers World Campus 101, a free course providing information
| students need to succeed in distance education. The course
| centers on basic requirements and logistics to help students
| decide whether distance learning is the right choice for
| them. In addition, the course's online faculty development
| program teaches online course skills to professors who are
| considering teaching via distance education. Through World
| Campus 101, students take a virtual tour of the campus,
| learn how to get help and prepare assignments, and are
| instructed in proper "netiquette" and composing messages on
| bulletin boards. The course also offers tips on how to
| communicate with instructors and other students, deal with
| response time issues, and strategize on how many hours to
| spend on each class.
