2003-2004 FIPP Guidelines: Responsibilities

Faculty Intern Responsibilities
Each Faculty Intern will:

  • Jointly develop a Learning Contract with the Faculty Mentor with input from the appropriate Dean and FIPP Coordinator.
  • Adhere to the terms and conditions of the Learning Contract.
  • Serve in the program for two semesters from August 18, 2003 to May 14, 2004.
  • Participate in the FIPP Orientation.
  • Participate in all FIPP-sponsored professional development opportunities.
  • Teach* courses as follows:
    • A minimum of 3 load hours per semester (2 load hours for service faculty).
    • No more than 9-11 load hours** per semester.
    • No more than two different courses in the fall semester.
    • A variety of courses in their discipline.
* Interns will not be paid extra to teach courses. Teaching is considered a requirement of the internship.
** The number of load hours should be determined based on the Faculty Intern's prior teaching experience and ability.
  • Attend meetings and events as required.
  • Complete evaluations as requested regarding the program and professional development activities.
  • Complete a status report at the end of the internship (due by May 30, 2004).

Faculty Intern Benefits

  • Faculty Interns will receive 90% of the base pay of full-time faculty (Grade 0, Step 1). If currently employed full-time at Maricopa, the Intern will be paid at the rate of her/his current salary or the Faculty Intern salary, whichever is higher for the period of the internship.
  • Faculty Interns who are full-time, regular employees of Maricopa receive all benefits to which they are entitled as Maricopa employees.
  • Faculty Interns who are not full-time, regular employees of Maricopa will receive sick and personal time, retirement benefits, medical benefits, and tuition waiver for themselves (dependents are not eligible for tuition waiver).
  • Faculty Interns will not be eligible for vacation during the internship.

Faculty Mentor Responsibilities
A lead FIPP Faculty Mentor must be a residential faculty in the same teaching field as the Faculty Intern and, preferably, someone with appointive status. Residential faculty who have not reached appointive status will be considered as mentors only under special conditions.

Mentors will:

  • Be willing to share their knowledge, materials, skills, and experience with the Faculty Interns.
  • Assist in the creation of a Learning Contract.
  • Monitor the Learning Contract during the two semesters.
  • Participate in the FIPP Orientation.
  • Provide opportunities for learning for the Faculty Interns.
  • Observe Interns teach and provide constructive feedback and positive learning suggestions.
  • Meet with the Faculty Interns at least once a week each semester.
  • Attend meetings and events as required.
  • Complete evaluations as requested regarding the Interns and the program.

Faculty Mentor Benefits

  • Receive three hours of reassigned time each semester. If the Faculty Intern selects a team of mentors, the college must decide how to allocate the three hours of reassigned time each semester.
  • Develop mentoring skills.

College Responsibilities
The President, Dean of Instruction, the Faculty President, and/or others designated by the President will:

  • Form a selection committee. The selection committee should include the college Faculty President.
  • Develop a plan to select the Faculty Intern and submit to the office of the VCAA for approval by March 5, 2003.
  • Submit their selected candidate's Application Cover Sheet, curriculum vitae or resume, personal statement of interest, and Learning Contract to the VCAA by April 25, 2003.
  • Provide a total of three load hours of reassigned time per semester to the Faculty Mentor. If the applicant selects a team of mentors, the college must decide how to allocate the three hours of reassigned time each semester.
  • Provide the Faculty Intern with supervised and structured experiences (e.g., tutoring, advising, teaching, course development) as well as professional growth opportunities.
  • Encourage the Faculty Intern to participate in college as well as District meetings and activities.
  • Provide office space and associated office equipment (including a computer) to the Faculty Intern.

District Responsibilities
The Division of Academic Affairs will provide a coordinator for the program.

  • The FIPP Coordinator will develop district-wide opportunities for participants to network, grow professionally, become familiar with the Maricopa culture, and assist in the development of the Learning Contract.
  • Provide funds to the colleges for reassigned time for the Faculty Mentors (three load hours per semester). If the applicant selects a team of Mentors, the college must decide how to allocate the funds among the Mentors.
