The focus of the Faculty In Progress Program is on learning the multiple roles of community college faculty. Selected Faculty Interns serve in the program for nine months, 30 to 40 hours per week.
During this time, they are required to teach a minimum of 3 load hours per semester, participate in professional development events, attend college department/division meetings, and observe master instructors, among other activities. In partnership with a faculty mentor, the Interns develop a learning contract that serves as the basis by which to guide the Faculty Intern in achieving his/her learning objectives throughout the internship.
Workshops, seminars, and learning sessions are participatory in nature and model active learning strategies. Topics include:
- Developing a Teaching Portfolio
- Instructional Skills Workshop
- Engaging Students In Active Learning
- Developing Multicultural Learning Environments
- Classroom Management
- Assessment as Evidence of Learning
- General Education at Maricopa
Some professional development events are designed to help Interns acquire the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to succeed in an academic job search. These include:
- Building Your Resume (workshops and coaching sessions)
- Interviewing Skills (workshops and coaching sessions)
- The Hiring Process at the Maricopa Community Colleges
Additional activities are planned in the spring to provide Interns with the opportunity to interact with residential faculty and administrators from the ten colleges in the Maricopa Community Colleges, as they continue to build networks and pursue residential faculty teaching positions.
The Faculty Internship Program culminates with a "FIPP Showcase," providing the faculty intern a platform by which to share their accomplishments.
