Faculty in Progress Program (FIPP)

Faculty In Progress Program (FIPP)

Maria Harper-Marinick, Ph.D. and Eric Leshinskie, MCLI

The Faculty in Progress Program (FIPP) is a nine-month internship established in 2001 for individuals interested in becoming full-time faculty. FIPP provides a diverse group of selected Faculty Interns with professional development activities and experiences that result in the knowledge and skills needed to be competitive in the pursuit of a residential teaching position with the Maricopa Community Colleges. Applicants to the program are required to meet the minimum qualifications in the discipline in which they intend to teach before they are selected as FIPP Interns.

As of August 2004, a total of 36 individuals had successfully completed the program. Of those, 20 have been hired in residential faculty positions, 18 of them within Maricopa.

For the academic year 2004-2005, 10 individuals have been selected as FIPP Faculty Interns. The Faculty Interns are required to teach a minimum of three load hours per semester, participate in professional development events, attend college department/division meetings, and observe master instructors, among other activities. Workshops, seminars, and learning sessions are participatory in nature and model active learning strategies.

Additional information about the program can be found at:

Dr. Belinda Ramos

Chandler-Gilbert Community College
Discipline: Psychology
Mentor: Dr. Scott Silberman

Malcolm Forbes once said, "Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one." I would add that KEEPING one's mind open is the goal of life-long learning.

I'm convinced that the FIPP experience is tailored to help each intern embrace this goal and in turn assist our talented and diverse student body find value in the art of keeping open minds and becoming a part of a community of life-long learners.

Belinda earned her Doctoral degree in Psychology from Northwestern University. While working for Daytona Beach Community College, Belinda taught classes as an adjunct faculty, served as the Coordinator for Small Business Development, and provided support and leadership to the Student Development Division. Recently Belinda began work with Estrella Mountain Community College as an adjunct instructor.

Gaye Oberlin

As a lifelong student, I know first hand the doors that are opened by education. What was once only a vague interest can quickly become a passion. What was once only an unrealized dream can become a life-changing reality. As a teacher, there is no greater feeling than to know that you have been a part of that process.

Gaye completed both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biology from Northern Arizona University. She recently worked at Arizona State University West as an Instructional Specialist for the Life Sciences Department. Gaye has taught biology on a part-time basis for Yavapai College, and also worked as a research specialist in the biology department at Northern Arizona University.

Malik Toms

District Office Intern at Estrella Mountain Community College
Discipline: English

FIPP is like learning to swim with a lifejacket on. It's an opportunity to understand the nuances both of teaching and administration without drowning in the sudden realization of your responsibilities.

Malik completed a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Master's degree in English from Iowa State University. While at Iowa State, Malik also taught English composition for six semesters. Recently, he was as an adjunct instructor at Estrella Mountain Community College. Malik has also been involved with the Maricopa Council on Black American Affairs (MCBAA).

Tanisha Johnson-Maxwell

Estrella Mountain Community College
Discipline: Counseling
Mentor: Debbie Pina

My goal for FIPP is to become a residential faculty in Maricopa in a position that would allow me to work in the areas of diversity and multiculturalism. I want to inspire individuals to embrace diversity and facilitate the infusion of multiculturalism. FIPP is an invaluable opportunity for me to enhance my professional and academic development. I believe the mentoring component of the program is key because it allows me to gain work experience, further my knowledge regarding faculty responsibilities, and have the opportunity to network and showcase my talents throughout the Maricopa County Community College District. The district strives for excellence, attains it, and seeks out progressive and innovative methods for continued growth and improvement. We are a perfect match!

Tanisha is a second-year doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology Program at Arizona State University. She completed her Master's degree in Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Tanisha is also an alumna of Mesa Community College. Since completing her Master's degree, Tanisha has worked with Chandler-Gilbert Community College as a part-time counselor, with Phoenix College as an adjunct instructor, and with Mesa Community College as a program advisor.

Karen Bandy

GateWay Community College

My goal for this FIPP internship is to become a better teacher. Even though I have several years experience in my field, I have not been trained to teach. The FIPP program offers many opportunities to learn different methods of teaching. I have two appointed mentors, but I have found that I have many mentors who are very supportive and want me to achieve success as a better teacher. I appreciate all the FIPP program has to offer!

Karen has over twenty years of experience in the nuclear medicine field ranging from staff technologist to supervisor. She is board certified in both Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology. For the past two years, Karen has served as the clinical coordinator for the nuclear medicine program at GateWay Community College. Prior to her work at GateWay, Karen held various positions with Desert Samaritan Medical Center, Chandler Imaging Center, and Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.

Amy MacPherson

Discipline: Spanish
Mentors: Marcella Fierro and Dr. Naomi Story

FIPP will provide me with a well-rounded understanding and hands-on experience of the multiple roles for faculty in the Maricopa Community College system. Through this program I will be able to facilitate student learning within the Spanish curriculum, help students understand cultural diversity, and develop skills to integrate technology with instruction.

Maria received both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Spanish from Montclair State University. She is completing her doctoral degree in Spanish from Arizona State University. Maria's teaching experience includes serving as adjunct faculty for Arizona State University West, visiting faculty at Whittier College, and most recently as adjunct faculty with Phoenix College.

Change is a constant in education. With the high-velocity environment at Maricopa, FIPP gives us tools to embrace change and use it to help our students. From curriculum development and diversity to technology and assessment, FIPP instills us with a teaching philosophy that connects to us our students and their goals. As an ESL instructor, FIPP training imparts teaching strategies and tactics to align my content delivery with a diverse student population.

Jeff received a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona State University, and is a member of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Jeff has been adjunct faculty for Phoenix College, Glendale Community College, and Rio Salado College. Prior to becoming a teacher, Jeff spent approximately twenty years as a marketing professional.

Jason Margolies

Paradise Valley Community College
Discipline: Mathematics
Mentor: Maribeth Marquard

The Faculty In Progress Program (FIPP) has been an invaluable experience. I came into FIPP as an "outsider" looking in at the Maricopa Community College District.. Now, my fingers are on the pulse of Paradise Valley Community College. While a future full time job is not guaranteed, I cannot think of a better program to be in to prepare me for the multiple aspects of community college life in Maricopa. As a "Fipper", I have been exposed to great full time faculty members in many teaching disciplines, as well as a diverse student population. In addition, my FIPP mentor Maribeth Marquard has been an unbelievable resource, as well as many other faculty members here at PVCC.

Jason completed his Bachelor's of Science in Computational Mathematics from Arizona State University. He also completed his Master's of Education degree in Educational Media and Computers from ASU. Jason's teaching experience includes teaching for Apollo College as a Computer Basics Instructor and also for Scottsdale Community College as a visual basic instructor.

Pedro Rubio

When thinking of the value of the Faculty In Progress Program (FIPP), I think of two words, OPPORTUNITY and PASSION. The program has and will provide a variety of invaluable opportunities and experiences that will develop my skills as an educator. It will also develop my character as an instructor. It reinforces and adds fuel to my burning passion of making a difference in all of my students' lives!

Pedro received a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. Pedro has worked as a technology consultant, curriculum consultant, and adjunct faculty for South Mountain Community College. He has also been an adjunct instructor with Estrella Mountain Community College.
