| Abstract Write a concise overview with descriptive information about your project (location, time span, etc.) not to exceed 120 words. To take advantage of spelling and word count tools, you can compose this in a blank Word document, copy the text, and paste it in below (all formatting will be reset to normal text). | |
| Diagnostic Medical Imaging (DMI) today is creating patient images in digital format. Now it is imperative to master the skills required for all imaging personnel who acquire patient information in electronic format. There are new restrictions on release of sensitive patient information because of new privacy guidelines per the Health Insurance Accountability & Portability Act (HIPAA). I am proposing to work on this project for seven weeks this summer in the Diagnostic Imaging Department at Maricopa Integrated Health System. I will train and work with their Patient Archiving System (PACS) obtaining a variety of HIPAA compliant case studies integrating all areas of imaging: Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Mammography. | |
| Purpose Explain your purpose in depth and include relevancy and components of the project. Include a statement of goals and objectives. This is what you want to do and why. | |
|
The purpose of this summer project is to master the intricies of a PACS system. I plan to learn how to acquire, sort and prepare a variety of case studies with pathology. Maricopa Integrated Health Systems has a state of the art digital acquisition system that is implemented hospital wide. They also have ten clinics throughout Phoenix that can send and receive images in digital format to departments and MD’s throughout their health care system. This advanced digital integration can be found at only a few sites in the state. Maricopa will allow me to create and collect images from their site; remove sensitive patient information; and store cases on CD ROM. Goals and objectives · Learn the day-to-day operations of how a Digital Imaging or PACS system is used in the hospital and clinical setting. · Acquire skills on the operation of a PACS system from set up to shut down · Observe how state of the art digital images for all imaging modalities are used in patient care and treatment. · Demonstrate use of imaging modalities and correlation of disease with normal and abnormal patients. · Develop HIPAA compliant presentations on CD ROM incorporating digital images
| Professional Growth Your own professional growth is a large part of your project. Your professional growth is important to you, your students, and possibly other colleagues. How will this project affect you professionally? What skills will you learn? What environment will you be working in, and how will it influence your teaching or other responsibilities? | |
|
This project will help me personally and professionally and this is a priceless opportunity. It will allow me be in a clinical setting within the Diagnostic Imaging Department at Maricopa. I will see state of the art filmless or digital formats are used to diagnose actual patients. I will also interact with the MD’s and staff while I am there and see how the PACS system affects day-to-day operations. Right now I am very frustrated because I do not have the time or opportunity to update my skills in the clinical setting. With this project, I will be better equipped to read cases and the diseases present using this new electronic format. Maricopa is a very busy site, and there are ten satellite clinics that are constantly sending and receiving information on a patient population that provides an abundance of pathology. What will this project do for me? · From May through June 2004 this project will give me time to explore and learn new things in medicine, imaging and patient care. · There are many changes and enhancements within Diagnostic Medical Imaging this will give me the opportunity to see how medicine in being practiced up close. · The opportunity to get in and see actual cases; then store them for future use · This is chance to observe firsthand how imaging is moving into new directions and learn how all modalities work together to correlate a care plan for the patient · I can take this knowledge into the classroom and share information learned

The students will benefit the most from this project in a variety of ways. Imaging is visual and the more cases you can provide to students the better they learn. To talk about and describe something is fine, however the proof is when you can actually show the student that because some imaging professional performed a particular case or study they helped provide the diagnosis for the patient and had a hand in their care and treatment. With this new information and these new pathways I can share the benefits digital imaging has on the practice of medicine. The cases will reside in a digital format for present or future use. The progression of learning how to create a digital image; send it to the reading MD; then transmission of the electronic images reflects what students will be seeing during their clinical training, then later on the job. How images are created, and archived at the completion of the imaging study, along with the correlation between all the Diagnostic Modalities will reflect the importance of all imaging areas to work together for better patient care.
