The purpose is to train counseling faculty in using new strategies for student success. GateWay Community College's Counseling Department will be implementing a new Success Program for students. It will be based on a new concept called "StrengthsQuest". The counseling faculty will be teaching, coaching and mentoring students on their strengths. The "On Course" workshop would be extremely helpful in implementing the "StrengthsQuest" program. The facilitator, Dr. Skip Downing, is an international faculty development consultant, an innovator in the field of student success, and the author of "On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life, 4th Ed." This popular text is used in student success classes, first-year seminars, and college writing courses. Goals: 1. Obtain new strategies for empowering students; 2. Train other GWCC faculty on learning strategie; 3. Improve student retention and academic success; 4. Implement "On Course" textbook into the SUCCESS [StrengthsQuest]program. Objectives: 1. Learn proven strategies to help students reach their greatest potential; 2. Personal growth and renewal as a counseling faculty member.
| Professional Growth Your own professional growth is a large part of your project. Your professional growth is important to you, your students, and possibly other colleagues. How will this project affect you professionally? What skills will you learn? What environment will you be working in, and how will it influence your teaching or other responsibilities? | |
|
This workshop will contribute towards our professional growth in the field of counseling. The retreat site provides a beautiful and relaxed setting that is ideal for personal growth. It will also provide an intensive exploration of new strategies for students in their learning process. This training will be useful to bring back to the GWCC campus in order to train other faculty members with new strategies in teaching. Because the Counseling Department will be implementing a brand new SUCCESS Program, using StrengthsQuest, it would be extremely helpful to obtain this training. * This project will be professionally up-lifting because I will be learning new ideas and concepts. It will be rewarding as it will be refreshing and provide needed rest and relaxation. * Skills to be learned will be based on strategies for college success for students. The skills will increase my ability to relate better to all ages and stages of college students. * We will have additional opportunity to communicate with fellow participants and previous workshop participants to explore and evaluate effectiveness of our implementation of learner-centered educational practices for empowering college students * The environment will help influence our teaching and responsibilities in cultural diversity by associating with a diversity of people from across the country.

Benefits to your colleagues or department * All department faculty attending this workshop will provide consistency in implementing the new strategies and content in the new Success Program for first-time college students. * By infusing the new strategies and “strengths” concept, this will strengthen the retention efforts with first-time and continuing college students.
