Glossary of Terms

adjunct faculty - previously known as part-time faculty, visiting staff faculty are those instructors hired on a semester-to-semester contract basis. Adjunct faculty normally are only permitted to teach less than nine load hours per semester. None of the programs or procedures in the Guidelines apply to adjunct faculty (see professional growth information on the Adjunct Faculty Association and the Renewal web sites)

approval - The committee or subcommittee reviews an application and officially affirms or sanctions the proposed activity. A faculty member must request approval of:

  1. academic course work for advancement within two years of completion.
  2. workshop or conference activities for advancement within 90 days of completion of the event
  3. for all other applications pre-approval is recommended.

credit hours - advancement is based on semester credit hours. Quarter hours are converted to semester hours by multiplying the quarter hours credits by 0.67 and rounding to the nearest tenth.

discipline/teaching field - The particular academic or occupational specialties of a faculty member. Faculty members are normally hired to teach or practice a specific discipline, such as mathematics, even though they may be certified in additional disciplines. Professional growth activities are expected to focus on the subject field(s) of a member's responsibilities at the College.

meet and confer process - The labor negotiations between the District Faculty Association and the Maricopa Community Colleges Governing Board which determines Residential Faculty Policies, salaries and benefits (see: RFP 1.2.7.).

pre-approval - The applicant requests approval from the Professional Growth Committee before commencing the activity. Pre-approval is synonymous with the term prior approval which was used in editions of the RFP and Guidelines prior to 1998.

program of study - a prescribed set of courses that must be taken to fulfill degree or certificate requirements for it to be granted by a college or university (See example).

residential faculty - Residential faculty are faculty members who are probationary or appointive faculty as specified in the manual of MCCD Residential Faculty Policies.

sabbatical eligibility - A faculty member must work 12 consecutive semesters before a sabbatical may be taken. The faculty member may apply in their sixth year (usually Fall of the 11th semester) for a sabbatical to be awarded in their 7th year. After a sabbatical the faculty member must work through the next 12 consecutive semesters before eligible again.
