faculty professional growth

What is the Professional Obligation of Faculty?

Faculty recognize their obligation to continually seek improvements in themselves, their knowledge and skills, and the methods utilized in their responsibilities. Faculty are expected to maintain membership and participate in professional organizations. Participation in business and planning sessions, and social activities at professional meetings are part of faculty professional obligation.

Activities included as part of one's teaching obligation or contractual responsibilities are not professional growth. These activities include:

  • department meetings
  • accreditation and articulation meetings
  • discipline instructional councils
  • advisement sessions within the Maricopa Community Colleges
  • curriculum/materials development
  • community advisory board meetings
  • new faculty orientation
  • other standard responsibilities

Any activity where faculty are primarily utilizing their current expertise is not considered professional growth.

The professional growth program is not intended to fully support all professional growth experiences. Faculty are expected to submit substantive and high quality proposals to the FPG program. A committee of faculty peers will review all proposals. This committee trusts faculty to live up to the high expectations inherent in professional growth but will work to confirm all applications.
