Below are selected examples of previous summer projects
Ava Jensen Scottsdale Community College 2001: A Behavioral Odyssey World Congress of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies My project is to attend the third World Congress of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, July 17-21, 2001. In July 1995, I attended the first World Congress of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was by far the most exciting professional conference I have ever attended and I continue to utilize ideas and skills gained from the numerous workshops in which I participated.
Ed SantaVicca Phoenix College Analysis and Evaluation of Community College Library Web Sites As Instruction Librarian at Phoenix College Library, I am involved in the development of new methods of teaching students, faculty and staff about the nature and scope of information resources available for research. As more faculty integrate the World Wide Web into instructional modules, or insist that it be used as part of a student's research process, it is important that the Library Web page(s) contain instructional elements (tutorials, annotations, exercises, etc.) that will assure student success. This project will allow me to expand my knowledge of what other community college libraries are doing in the areas of Web-based library instruction and information literacy. I expect to complete this project over the course of 20 works days (7hrs/day) during the month of June 2001. Preliminary identification of sites to be examined will occur before the study begins.
Ilene M. Borze GateWay Community College The 3rd Triennial World Asthma Meeting My summer project is to attend the 3rd Triennial World Asthma Meeting July 13th to 15th 20001 in Chicago, Illinois. This scientific session is a 3-day seminar providing a vast amount of information on asthma, current research of asthma, and resources for the medical provider and other health professionals.
James Gordon Patterson Paradise Valley Community College Learning Development Tools for Online Education The purpose of this project is to help me develop expertise in HTML coding (used in putting together web pages) and an application program, FrontPage 2000. After I have acquired this new skill, I will then be able to develop interesting and useful web pages as stand-alones for import into the online course backbone called BlackBoard. I have no formal training in HTML and web page development and would like a sustained study time in the summer to acquire these skills.
James T. Abraham Glendale Community College Curso de repaso For my summer project I plan to attend a two-week seminar for teachers of Spanish and four-week seminar on advanced grammar and conversation at the Don Quixote Institute in Madrid. It has been eight years since I have spent time in Spain. I would like to update my knowledge of Spanish language and culture to better serve my students, college and district. This project offers me an opportunity to discuss the latest strategies in foreign language instruction with experts from around the world and sharpen my own skills within my discipline.
Jim Rubin Paradise Valley Community College Research, Comparison, and Synthesis The first part of my project will be to conduct research in the area of spirituality. Specifically, I will be researching general, as well as specific (religion-based) areas of spiritual concepts and development, and how one develops a personal spiritual belief system, that is not necessarily related to one's religion preference. I will then compile and organize a literature review. Finally, I plan to compare and synthesize research findings. This extensive research will provide me a most solid background in the area of spirituality. From this foundation, I hope to someday create and utilize a course workbook for the course, CPD102AJ: Personal Spiritual Development.

Steve Kadel Glendale Community College Virtual Locality Summer Project Geology is a very visual science. Much of the material presented to students in the introductory lectures and labs suffers from a lack of ability to "be there", in the field, looking at the rocks. In my role as a Geology instructor at Glendale Community College, it is incumbent upon me to be as skilled as possible in helping my students visualize rocks in their natural setting. Recent advances in computer software and digital imaging have made it possible to bring the outdoors into the classroom more effectively than ever. This summer project, Virtual Locality, has been designed to vastly increase my expertise with the latest digital image/video and web-development software that supports geologic visualization. This project combines digital imagery of sites of great geologic/instructional interest in Arizona, computer overlays of geologic maps on digital terrain models (in 3-D) and web page construction for distribution to the wider instructional community at-large. The initial goal is to include 15 geological sites of interest on the web site. It is intended that this number be expanded progressively after the summer.
Sue Van Boven Paradise Valley Community College Pearl River Delta Seminar/Field Study I participated in a study abroad experience under the direction of the East-West Center. As part of a nationwide group of 20 faculty, we traveled to Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China. I studied at the University of Hong Kong and at Zhongshan University. During the stay in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, I attended numerous seminars (ie., ÒAdministrative Inter-Dependence between PRD & Hong KongÓ, ÒPost-97 Hong Kong PoliticsÓ, ÒDevelopment of GuangzhouÓ) regarding the economic conditions, governmental situations and cultural issues in the Pearl River Delta Region. In addition to seminars, I visited a Nike manufacturing plant, a clock manufacturing plant, government agencies, and housing developments.
William James Lyon Paradise Valley Community College Visiting Social Service Agencies The purpose of this project was, in essence, to: 1) learn about the latest research in the social work/helping profession fields; 2) learn about the latest treatment protocol in the context of counseling and/or intervention of clientele from diverse backgrounds; 3) to learn the latest legal/ethical standards helping professionals should keep in mind when working directly as social service workers; 4) to learn about those resource and referral organizations specific to Maricopa county. To accomplish I sat out to visit 15 non-profit organizations or individuals from such organizations during the period from June 4, 2001 to July 13,2001. In addition, by allocating a minimum of two (2) hours at each of the 15 agencies, I would be able to accomplish the aforementioned objectives, as well as increase my knowledge, experience, and network resource base in the field of social work. This wealth of knowledge would, in turn, be shared with both social work faculty and students at Paradise Valley Community College, as well as other interested faculty and staff who provide a service learning component. Moreover, the experience should also expose me to the current trends and needs in the field, which in turn serve as the basis for potential areas of focus when developing social work curricula.
