A Nationwide Study of International Education Programs
I visited international education programs and ethnic studies departments throughout the United States. At all the colleges, I gathered information on recruitment, student registration, the impact of 9/11 on campuses, visas, as well as student retention, e-learning, and intercultural relations. After the visits, I compiled information into manuals, which I have kept on hand for any faculty or staff at Maricopa to access. I have also read extensively on international students and international relations; materials which I will be using in my classes and all of my roles in the Maricopa Community College District.

Multimedia CD-ROM for Shakespeare in Film
My project was to collect supporting materials for ENH256, Shakespeare in Film. I was successful in collecting material and creating the presentation on a CD. The sources are organized under headings, such as Shakespeare's Life, Elizabethan society, and The Globe Theater (including a virtual tour). In addition to texts, there are pictures, music, and actors speaking passages from the plays. Finally, there are links to all the plays so that students can read the works before they view the films in class. At the beginning of the semester, each student received a copy of the CD, which now serves as the textbook for the course. I tested the CD during the first month of class, and the students responded very favorably.

Intercultural Communication Processes
In this narrative research and cultural immersion project, I (a) interviewed immigrants to learn strategies they use to help acculturate to an adopted culture and develop cultural competence; (b) interacted in academic institutions in Peru/Bolivia and Mexico (4 weeks each). My research goal was learning better how to relate, demonstrate, and teach intercultural competence in such a way that my students realize diversity and apply that realization in their daily lives. While results of the individual interviews proved disappointing in terms of contributing new knowledge, two of the participants' stories will form the basis for digital stories for classroom use.

Multicultural Studies
In fulfillment of my sabbatical, I have completed all of the courses and activities I had listed in my sabbatical plan. Completion of the courses helped me work towards a Master's Degree in Humanities from California State University at Dominguez Hills. I also completed the Advancement to Candidacy Exams necessary to be eligible to begin work on my thesis at California State University at Dominguez Hills and two contracts necessary to be eligible to begin work on my thesis. In consultation with my advisor, I selected a thesis topic. I chose a topic in the area of the art and mythology of the Maya. I traveled in Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico in order to study the major ancient Maya sites of Copan, Tikal, Yaxchilan, Bonampak, and Palenque. This travel was extremely beneficial to me in doing research for my thesis. I also completed the first draft of my thesis.

Postdoctoral Work in Psychopharmacology
The purpose of my sabbatical experience was a full time academic postdoctoral study program in psychopharmacology at Infinity University's The Psychopharmacology Institute. The program was primarily Internet based and proved to successfully meet my needs as an adult returning student. My sabbatical study produced the completion of the academic coursework for the postdoctoral certificate in psychopharmacology.

Development of Reading ESL Tutorials
This sabbatical met critical student learning needs in the Reading Department at Phoenix College. In the fall of 2001, the Reading Department established a Reading Laboratory that had 28 new Dell computers and a number of reading software programs. Although there was software for the first and second levels of Reading ESL students, there was little software for the third and fourth level Reading ESL students to use. Approximately 200 Reading ESL students did not have the opportunity to use technology to practice basic reading skills in phonics, vocabulary in context, main ideas, and details. The goal of this sabbatical was to meet this need and to develop computerized practice materials for third and fourth level Reading ESL students. As a result of this sabbatical, the on-line Reading ESL Tutorials are now available.

A Window to the World: An International Children's Literature Database
Literature has always provided a way to see the world from another perspective. Now, more than ever before, it is crucial that our children be exposed to many perspectives so they can appreciate both the similarities and differences of those from other cultures and countries as they explore what is like to be human. This database consists of annotations for 230 books from 52 countries sorted by country, topic, genre, and age. The international literature annotated in this database will help P-12 teachers prepare their students to live successfully in the diverse global society that they will have to navigate.

Macroeconomics Concepts and Theories on the Web
CirF is a web-based application that allows users to perform "what-if" experiments on a hypothetical economy by providing an interface that integrates a circular flow diagram with supply and demand analysis. Numbers can be entered onto the diagram to represent economic events whose effects can be traced throughout the economy. The program is set up to illustrate the most important macroeconomic issues-such as the effects of monetary and fiscal polices and changes of production costs and technology-as well as the most prominent evonice perspectives. The program can be used for student homework and for instructor demonstration. CirF can be accessed at

Racial and Ethnic Relations in the United States
My sabbatical was spent doing research for and writing a new textbook for my Sociology 140 class, Racial and Ethnic Minorities. This text is not about race and ethnicity per se; it is about the differential treatment of racial and ethnic groups in American society. Definitions of major concepts are in the first chapter, description of major theoretical perspectives are in the second, the third and fourth chapters deal with racism in the United States in general and the criminal justices system in particular. A chapter on Arizona and Phoenix contains demographic data pertinent to the topic is followed by a chapter on the criminal justice systems with an in-depth examination of a capital punishment case that serves to exemplify problems in this area.

A Study of Classical Rhetorical Techniques
The purpose of my Sabbatical was to study classical (Greek and Roman) Rhetorical techniques and the language techniques of Shakespeare and incorporate them in to 101 and 102 curriculum. A further portion of my proposal concerned designing outcomes assessment instruments to provide platforms to measure the success of the newly-integrated materials, as well as to measure students' overall success as writers in ENG 101-ENG 102. Historically, classical rhetoric was not only an essential component of students' educations but served, for much of its two-thousand-year history, as "the central discipline in the curriculum" (Corbett21). As well as being a linguistic innovator himself Shakespeare was well-schooled in classic rhetoric.

Northern Ireland: Is Peace Possible?
During the 2003-2004 academic year I traveled to Northern Ireland to collect oral histories from people who have had some personal experience with "The Troubles" since 1969. I interviewed authors, politicians, Catholics, Protestants, former terrorists, artists, publicans, widows, parents who had lost children to violence, and just ordinary people, all of whom have stories about the situation. After returning, I transcribed the interviews, and wrote instructional modules with three other PVCC faculty members, for use in their courses. In preparation for the visits and the module creations, I read over 100 books on Irish history and the current political situation. The modules, along with the oral histories, research materials, and an introduction to the Troubles, can be viewed at

An Integrated Program of Study for Diagnostic Medical Imaging
The professional growth committee granted a one-semester sabbatical for the 2003-2004 academic year to research, design and potentially develop a collaborative BS/BAS Health Science degree between GWCC and a 4-year college. This model would be different from the traditional 2+2 articulation by allowing for more than 60 credits to be transferred. The project focus was GWCC's Diagnostic Medical Imaging (DMI) programs: Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy and Ultrasound. Professional organizations are promoting that entry-level Health Care workers like DMI attain a Bachelor's degree. This report summarizes the progress made on achieving the goals and objectives stated the sabbatical proposal.

Journeys of Janus: An Introduction to the Irish Philosophical Tradition
In fulfillment of my sabbatical proposal, I have completed five chapters that summarize and criticize five philosophers. These five philosophers represent the time span from the Middle Ages to the late 20th century. While I had planned to examine some seven philosophers, the five chapters that I have completed do reflect an historical symmetry, and thus satisfactorily introduce Irish philosophy. I am in the process of writing an introduction and conclusion; whereupon I will meet with my publishing agent, and the book will be sent to press as, Journeys of Janus: An Introduction to the Irish Philosophical Tradition. After determination of protocol for using one's own book for instruction, I will probably begin using it in Introduction to Philosophy. The book will, of course, be available to anyone who wishes to see it.

Thinking Critically about Whole Person Healing
The issue addressed in this project is the lack of and/or access to reliable information for the general public regarding personal health and healing via what has come to be known as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) or integrative medicine, or more accurately, whole person healing (WPH). The terms will be used interchangeably as the context warrants. This information void is filled by designing and disseminating courses that are both desired and useful for students, both immediately and throughout life. The courses may be modularized so that the delivering institutions may choose from a variety of emphases. Evaluation entails two perspectives: 1) the design of the course; and 2) its effects on the students. Formative evaluations address the following: curriculum content, the effects the course had on students' critical thinking skills, and the effects the course had on students' attitudes and beliefs about WPH. Summative evaluations include course enrollment and retention measures, and effectiveness of the curriculum.

Macroeconomics Concepts and Theories on the Web
During the 2003 Fall Semester I was privileged to work with GCC Economics professor, Hannes Kvaran, on a collaborative sabbatical project. This project, a macroeconomics web application, infused Professor Kvaran's knowledge and use of the macroeconomic circular flow model into a unique, interactive web application for use by students and teachers online.
My part in the actual development of this circular flow web application, called CirF, required me to learn web application development. I accomplished this by reading technical books and articles, completing tutorials, experimenting with new techniques, spending long hours designing and writing code, and collaborating extensively with Professor Kvaran. CirF (http://gnet.acad.gc.maricopa.edu/cirf/cirf/CFFrame.htm) is the product of past experience, faithful self-study, frustrating experimentation, and enormous respect between colleagues.

Doctoral Work in Choral Music
The purpose of my sabbatical leave was for me to complete my doctoral degree in choral music from Arizona State University. As I write this report I have completed all of the course work and the residency requirements. I have taken and passed my final written and oral examinations. The defense of my dissertation was completed at the end of September and my committee has signed off on everything. I am now just waiting for some copyright clearance for some of the texts in my dissertation, and am still making some minor adjustments that were suggested by my committee. It is still my hope (depending on the copyright issues) to graduate this December.

Fundamentals of Microbiology
My sabbatical involved the development and revision of the narrative for a microbiology textbook titled Fundamentals of Microbiology designed for community college and university instructors and students in pre-nursing and applied science programs. This text complements the pedagogical changes taking place today in college science reform. In the fall semester, I completed the revision for the text, which was published on March 1, 2004 by Jones and Bartlett Publishers, Boston. In the spring semester, I completed the Student Study Guide, Instructor's Manual, and all electronic materials for the student web site and CD-ROM. These materials were published on May 10, 2004.

Web Site Design
My sabbatical included education, travel, and work experience to become more proficient in the area of Web Site Design, to research industry needs in this area and to be able to bring the most current information and technologies to students. For the Education portion, I took a series of courses to prepare to take the CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster) exams to ultimately achieve a CIW Web Designer certificate and become a certified CIW instructor, both of which I did accomplish. I also aligned Gateway curriculum so that students could prepare for CIW exams. In order to understand the local demand for web site designers, I interviewed businesses locally and abroad. For travel and work, I spent several months in the Netherlands at Koning Willem I College. I worked in different departments on several projects including teaching JavaScript, building a web site for a collaboration project between European colleges, assisting in the creation of an online web design class and giving lectures.

Biotechnology Curriculum Development
Biology is undergoing a revolution due to the unprecedented advances in the field of Biotechnology. My project was to develop the curriculum in biotechnology to mirror the unparalleled growth and excitement in the research arena.
I was very successful in meeting the goals of my sabbatical project:
- I was able to expand my knowledge of biotechnology and had an opportunity to explore ways of teaching it.
- I was able to synthesize, and revise innovative biotechnology-based curricular units in existing general biology courses.
- I began offering new courses in biotechnology to get the students prepared for the imminent biotechnology revolution.
- I am in the process of building a certificate program for biotechnology with a steering committee that is going to help us define our niche at CGCC.

Bioterrorism and Hospital Preparedness
My project gave me an appreciation for all of the people and agencies that are working on our behalf toward preparing for a potential disaster as occurred on September 11, 2001. I have always had an interest in Public Health, and was able to work and brainstorm with a variety of people including physicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, geographical specialists, educators, various counties other than Maricopa, hospital personnel, vendors, fire department, scientists, industrial hygienists. They all gave so freely of their knowledge and wanted to include me in their endeavor. I felt like one of the group, no matter what situation I was in, plus I learned so much about something that I had only an interest in, but not a lot of information. I know so much more now and want to share that information with others.

Development of Active Learning Workbook for Human Anatomy and Physiology II
My sabbatical was a two-step process. First, I redeveloped all of my PowerPoint presentations for the students and instructor to better reflect my concentration on major objectives in the course. Second, I developed a Learning Workbook that includes learning strategies, a list of homework questions not covered in lecture, student learning objectives and important terms for every unit, short classroom activities for more difficult concepts, crossword puzzles, essay questions with important points noted, and three assessment activities on units of blood, red blood cell formation and destruction, and flow of blood through the heart.
