Proposals for Sabbatical Leave

What should a sabbatical proposal include?

Your sabbatical proposal need not be a lengthy document. However, it must contain sufficient information for the reviewers to evaluate the merit of the proposal and the benefit it will have for the faculty member and the institution. In order for a proposal to be accepted for review, you must submit a total of 13 copies and provide:

Follow the format of the Sabbatical Evaluation Worksheet

  1. Abstract – in 150 words describe what you are doing and why it is important (may be published on the website).
  2. Purpose of the Project
    • Goal(s) – what the sabbatical will accomplish
    • Objectives – steps to achieve the goal(s)
  3. Personal and Professional Qualifications - should include qualifications relevant to the proposal such as recent education, skills, experience, professional activities, and personal interests
  4. Execution of Sabbatical
    • Description of Preplanning
      • May include contacts made, proof of acceptance, letters of support, statement of cooperation (include supporting documents  in the appendices*)
    • Timeline
      • A timeline including pre, actual, and post sabbatical activities showing your plan to accomplish the objectives to achieve your goal(s)
  5. Expected Outcomes
    • Expected professional growth – clearly resulting from achieving the stated objectives; may include examples of personal growth and/or renewal
    • Significant professional impact – should include examples related to students, department, college, district, and/or community
    • Proposal - why should this proposal be funded?

* Examples of supporting documents that MAY be included in the appendices

  • Advanced degree
    • Letter of acceptance into an accredited degree program
    • Approved degree program of study with course plan for the sabbatical
  • Research and/or publication
    • Prospectus
    • Letter of intent from publisher
    • Evidence of prior reading and/or research in the area
    • Outline of topics to be investigated or developed
  • Curriculum and materials development
    • Outline and description of materials to be developed
    • Evidence of collaboration with related instructional groups
  • Travel related to subject field
    • Travel itinerary
    • Evidence of relevance to educational responsibilities
  • Practical training or job experience
    • Acceptance letter from business/institution
    • Evidence of relevance to educational responsibilities
  • Update knowledge in subject field
    • Description of activities and/or courses
