How to Apply for Professional Unpaid Leave

Your Professional Unpaid Leave proposal need not be a lengthy document. However, it must contain sufficient information for the reviewers to evaluate the merit of the proposal and the benefit it will have for the faculty member and the institution. In order for a proposal to be accepted for review, you must submit a total of 13 copies and provide:

  • Completed application:
    • With signatures from your FPG representative, your department/division chair, and dean of instruction.
    • Summary statement of Unpaid Professional Leave purpose suitable for publication and Governing Board review. Write 2-4 sentences in lay language that captures the essence of the proposal.
  • Personnel Information form Š use the sabbatical Personnel Information form (include this form with the original application only).

In your proposal...

Tell the committee:

  1. What you propose to do by identifying your goals and objectives
  2. How this will be accomplished:
    • Your qualifications as related to the proposal
    • Provide evidence of planning
      • Describe the contacts made, include confirmation of participation and cooperation from outside agency
    • A timeline showing your plan to accomplish the relevant activities.
  3. The professional growth you expect to achieve from your Professional Unpaid Leave.

Additional Supporting Documents

Depending on the type of Professional Unpaid Leave you propose, additional documentation may be necessary as follows and may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced degree
    • Letter of acceptance into an accredited degree program
    • Approved degree program of study with course plan for the Professional Unpaid Leave
  • Curriculum and materials development
    • Outline and description of materials to be developed
    • Evidence of collaboration with related instructional groups
  • Travel related to subject field
    • Travel itinerary
    • Evidence of relevance to educational responsibilities
  • Practical training or job experience
    • Acceptance letter from business/institution
    • Evidence of relevance to educational responsibilities
  • Update knowledge in subject field
    • Description of activities and/or courses
  • Research and/or publication
    • Prospectus
    • Letter of intent from publisher
    • Evidence of prior reading and/or research in the area
    • Outline of topics to be investigated or developed

Committee Evaluation

The committee will evaluate the proposal on itÕs purpose, plan and expected results. Upon approval the proposal will be forwarded to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and then to the Governing Board.

Formal Notification

Applicants are notified of Governing Board action by certified mail from the office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
