In Defense of Pluralism: Developing Intercultural Competence in the Classroom
Drs. Milton and Janet Bennett
The Convocation keynote address from Drs. Milton and Janet Bennett will serve as an introduction to a three-part workshop on January 4, 7, and 8.
The Bennetts have presented previously at Maricopa and have been asked to return to conduct a more in-depth workshop. This three-part workshop focuses on strategies for developing intercultural communications and multicultural thinking in the classroom. This workshop has been pre-approved for 11 clock hours towards Faculty Professional Growth (FPG) non-academic advancement. Participants must register online and attend all 11 hours.
Intercultural Competence: The Mindset (Part 1 of 3)
Friday, Jan. 4, 1:30 - 4:30 p.m.
at Phoenix College in the Bulpitt Auditorium (AU), see the location map.
Intercultural Competence: The Skillset (Race and Gender) (Part 2 of 3)
Monday, Jan. 7, 1:30-4:30
at Scottsdale Community College in the Student Center Turquoise Room (SC 164), see the location map.
Intercultural Competence: The Skillset (Culture-General Interaction) (Part 3 of 3)
Tuesday, Jan. 8, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In this three-part workshop participants will:
- gain an understanding of the importance of "cultural humility" in domestic and global human relations, and how education in general and intercultural education in particular support democratic pluralism and counteract absolutism;
- will identify the mindset and skillset of intercultural competence; and
- will increase their own "cultural self-awareness."

In conjunction with the Employee and Organizational Learning Team (EOLT), the Bennetts will be offering an additional workshop from 8:00 - 11:30 a.m. on January 7, "Developing Intercultural Competence: Creating a Climate of Respect in the Workplace." See the EOLT web site for details and registration.
