Keynote Speaker
Dr. Diane Halpern
Director, The Berger Institute Claremont McKenna College, Claremont, CA
A noted psychologist and leading researcher on applying the science of learning, Dr. Halpern will discuss what we are learning about learning. Empirical evidence has shown that learning is rarely, if ever, a passive activity, which may be the best reason for developing learners who are actively engaged in learning tasks. Dr. Halpern will draw upon theories and research from the science of learning to suggest ways that instructors can direct learning activities to promote long-term retention and transfer of learning.
Dr. Halpern is the author and editor of several books on critical thinking and has won many awards for her teaching and research, including the 2002 Western Psychological Association Outstanding Teaching Award, 1999 American Psychological Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching, 1996 Distinguished Career Award for Contributions to Education given by the American Psychological Association, the California State University's State-Wide Outstanding Professor Award, the Outstanding Alumna Award from the University of Cincinnati, the Silver Medal Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, and the G. Stanley Hall Lecture Award from the American Psychological Association. Dr. Halpern was a Fulbright Fellow in Moscow, Russia, a Rockerfeller Scholar-in-Residence at Bellagio, Italy, and recently returned from a semester at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey. She worked as a consultant and author for the U. S. Department of Education on the Goals 2000 Project that established "an advanced ability to think critically" as a national priority.
