How will our student population and their learning goals change and be the same in the next 10 years?

How will student learning change and be the same in the next 10 years?

As student learning goals and opportunities continue to evolve, how will we need to work differently as individuals, as departments, as an institution, and as a system?

Major themes

Student population will be more diverse.
Distance learning and technology will have a continued impact on how students learn.
The institution and faculty must support and use a variety of approaches to promote student learning.

Representative Comments

[Student population will be] more diverse - race, disabilities, foundations, those who in past would not consider college, preparedness, change in career, lifelong learners.
Students are more job-oriented, proficiency-based, more short-term, returning students. Less emphasis on liberal arts.
They [students] will be much more computer literate and expecting the technology.
Students may be more self-motivated.
Distance learners from out of the state and out of the country.
More disadvantaged students taking courses, more diverse student population - age, cultures, languages.
More and more part-time versus full-time students.
There are more professionals from business in classes.
Having more home schooled students who do not have the socialization skills.
Unprepared students, some not knowing how to read and write.
Multi-generation attendees.
Advanced technology requires student to continue learning.
More are relying on high tech which threatens critical thinking skills - donÕt know difference between fact and fiction.
More technology will be used - but need the balance of personal contact.
Technological change will determine some of the new goals.
More distance learning, computers will be essential/integral to learning.
Isolation will increase from other students, peers, and faculty - more impersonal.
How do we assess distance learning?
Technology haves and have-nots gap will widen.
Internet is viewed by students as being easier.
Communication process will change; feedback will be more immediate.
Increase in technology, increase in written communication - denying speaking/communication skills.
Distance learning is difficult for instructor as well as the student.
Teachers will need to modify styles, attitudes, strategies as distance learners increase. Role of teacher is different.
More round table discussion groups to foster communication among students - add senior students as role models.
More experiential/kinetic learning, distance learning, modules, group learning/cohort, faster-paced, condensed, accelerated classes.
To meet industry needs, there needs to be more flexible scheduling and different teaching styles.
Must prepare to teach at unusual hours and places.
Interact - personally with colleagues in and across disciplines.
Flexibility and rapid response to faculty needs and choice of educational delivery.
Implement inter/intra disciplinary approaches to learning on a continuing basis.
Provide environment that allows self-learning paces and styles.
Expand/diversify instructional delivery styles to meet needs of cultural diversity.
Change time periods, Saturday classes, online, evening, adapting how and when we teach.
