What are new directions for professional development that are necessary for the next 10 years??

How can we better sustain professional development across the district and within the colleges?

As we enter the new millennium, what will you need to do to prepare yourself? And, what will the Maricopa and college systems need to do to support you in this change?

Major themes

There is a need for technology training, including how to integrate it into the classroom.
The professional growth process needs to be streamlined and allow for broader participation.
There is a need for greater support for those who are involved in professional growth activities.

Increase opportunities to utilize and learn new technology.
More computer literacy/technology applications.
Suggestions/training on how to apply new technology to teaching.
Teaming of traditional teachers with technology teachers to incorporate technology into traditional subjects.
Changes in delivery technology - must be "kept up with" - we have to keep learning new technology.
Long term plans by dept/division/college for technology development.
Everybody needs to be technologically savvy - not just those in the computer field.
Make professional growth process easier, also sabbatical process.
Continued ease or simplification of professional growth process for instructors who are taking workshop, etc., to maintain currency for certification.
Change structures - administration not limited in professional growth travel/events; faculty limited to once every 2 years for $$ - or as funds available each year.
Lower division courses should be okayed.
Offer videoconference opportunities for professional growth.
Professional growth guidelines are too restrictive (e.g., computer science does not have graduate level classes - so guidelines need to be liberalized).
Work experience needs to be counted - guidelines for work experience need to be liberalized.
Too much paperwork for professional growth.
Expand possibilities outside of current disciplines.
Value our own resources for professional growth - count MCCD classes.
Sabbatical process: now is competitive, should it be? Need more $$ so can fund everyone who has a good proposal; now is inequitable.
Correct inequities aross the district (like different amounts awarded for travel at each of the campuses.
Serious problem: have to "keep up", but get no promotion, salary steps, etc.
Increase available monies, especially for adjunct faculty.
Professional growth should give credit for required technological exams.
More incentive/reward to learn new things or do innovative things; encourage more to participate.
More release time to learn new technology such as Blackboard with follow-up tutorials and help.
Expectations for faculty to partake in professional development; require faculty to do faculty development: research, conferences, classes, degrees.
Release time vs. expect us to teach a full load and participate in professional development in our "spare time".
District has to support professional development with financial commitment.
We need more detailed information on how to obtain professional growth.
More off-hours training available (not while we teach); flexibility.
Need an agency pool that has faculty fill in when we go to professional development.
Ask faculty and staff what they want and support them in their growth endeavors.
Encourage departments to design strategic plans of where they want to grow.
Conference! People need to share their info, they need to share what they learned campus and district-wide.
