The Swiss Web Knife

Indispensible. Reliable. Always carry one when you venture into the web wilderness.

The Swiss Web Knife is more than just another list of sites - these are the quick and direct reference tools that will increase your odds of survival in the web jungle! We are looking for your favorites, so send your trustiest blades to blade specialist. If this particular javascript-enabled model is not working well, try our old econo-blade.

NOTE: This site is no longer maintaned or updated, and many of the links below likely do not work or may not lead to the sites they once linked to. This sort of manual organization of links was feasible in the 1990s when the web was young, but you will find what you are looking for more reliably by using the subject directories at Google or Yahoo.

Blade Collection

This knife had been through a few overhauls here and there, so if the tool is not quite right, try another version from our drawer:

  • 3-Jan-02 most recent (the blade you see!)
This latest, greatest knife uses a compact menu system from Nick Heinle's book Designing with Javascript, see http://www.webcoder.com/. Other features include a more regal CSS format. Links last checked 3-Jan-02.
  • circa 1999 last menu based version
The first knife with drop down menus, a bit stacked and clunkier HTML
  • circa 1996 no javascript version
older version of tables, no javascript
