CGCC and ASU East at the Williams Campus: A New Partnership in Baccalaureate Education
Margaret Hogan, CGCC and David Schwalm, ASU East

Exciting things are happening this fall at the new Williams Campus, formerly known as Williams Air Force Base in southeast Mesa.

The Maricopa Community Colleges and Arizona State University (ASU) East both received substantial portions of the Williams campus, including classrooms and laboratories, abundant student housing, recreational facilities, and other amenities of a small community. Maricopa's Williams Education Center has recently been designated a satellite campus of Chandler-Gilbert Community College, housing CGCC's occupational programs in aviation and semiconductor manufacturing. Williams will also be the home of Mesa Community College's Fire Science/EMT and Mortuary Science programs and GateWay Community College's nursing assistant classes. ASU's School of Technology and School of Agribusiness and Resource Management have moved in their entirety -- degree programs, courses, students, faculty, staff, and equipment -- from the Tempe Main campus.

Rather than simply operating side by side, Chandler-Gilbert Community College and ASU East are transforming the fact of co-location at the new campus into the reality of co-operation through a powerful new "partnership in baccalaureate education".

  • ASU East is offering baccalaureate degree programs in agribusiness and in a range of specialties in technology, along with a small selection of upper division supporting courses. Additional degree programs will be developed.

  • CGCC is providing the lower division general studies and general interest courses to complement and enrich the baccalaureate programs ASU East will offer at Williams.

The partnership includes cooperation in curriculum planning and extends to academic support services as well. CGCC and ASU East are sharing instructional and office space and working together to provide library support, to ensure access to computers and computer resources, and to offer a coordinated class schedule. Student services -- such as admissions, registration, financial aid, and academic advising -- will be provided by ASU East and CGCC staff working together in a central location to serve all Williams Campus students.

The cooperative arrangements between ASU East and CGCC at Williams that start with academic programs and services run through virtually all of the functions of college campuses:

  • CGCC is managing all the recreation facilities, including a gymnasium, a full feature fitness center, and outdoor facilities -- tennis courts, a track, and assorted playing fields. CGCC will also organize intramural sports.

  • ASU East has coordinated the management of all of the housing -- both individual houses and residence hall rooms -- which are available to both university and community college students, faculty, and staff.

  • All Williams Campus students have access to on-campus food services, a convenience store, and a book store.

  • All students have access to virtually unlimited free parking.

  • Both institutions work with other campus partners to provide security and maintain common areas.

ASU East and CGCC -- combining their academic strengths with the unique features of the campus -- are cooperatively offering complete baccalaureate degree programs at a single location -- all at a significant saving to students and to Arizona taxpayers. The Williams Campus "partnership in baccalaureate education" takes community college/university cooperation to the next level and provides students with a new and exciting choice in higher education in Arizona.
