11. Engaging Students through Animated PowerPoint Notes Phong Chau Glendale Community College (2008-2009) I will create animated lecture notes in PowerPoint for Intermediate Algebra course (MAT 120/121), which will include graphs, diagrams, pictures, animation, and links to important websites. Math is a boring subject to most students, and these animated notes would help stimulate and accelerate students understanding of mathematics concepts in Intermediate Algebra course. These notes could be incorporated into a variety of instructional formats including hybrid course structure and web-based student study aids. * This grant project is currently in progress
Final report MLX entry 12. Experiencing the Legacy of Alwin Nikolais. Sally Jesse Chandler-Gilbert Community College (2008-2009) This grant will bring Alberto Del Saz, former member of the Alwin Nikolais Dance Theater, to Chandler-Gilbert Community College to teach Nikolais technique, discuss the Nikolais creative process, share personal experiences and insights to the work of Alwin Nikolais, and create a new work for Chandler-Gilbert Community College students. * This grant project is currently in progress
Final report MLX entry 13. Exploring Movement Analysis and its application to dance technique. Sally Jesse Chandler-Gilbert Community College (2008-2009) This project will introduce students and faculty to the analytical study of dance technique using Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals. Bill Evans, nationally known dancer, choreographer, and master teacher will be brought in to conduct classes for three to ten days (depending on funding) in January of 2009. Each day, students of the workshop will be introduced to one and one half hours of modern dance technique, one and one half hours of Bartenieff Fundamentals, one and one half hours of Shape/Space concepts, and one and one half hours of Effort concepts. These concepts are elemental in understanding dance as an art form as well as understanding the use of the body in dance. * This grant project is currently in progress

GateWay Genographic Project for Biological Anthropology Students Vincent Huffman GateWay Community College (2008-2009) The project is intended to provide a highly innovative learning opportunity for GateWay Community College students who are enrolled in the Fall and Spring ’08 semesters in a total of four sections of “Stones, Bones, and Human Evolution (ASM104). A dominant competency in ASM 104 is to explore population genetics at an individual and at a global level. This MCLI Learning Grant proposal requests funds to engage 100 ASM104 students in the international Genographic Project. Each student will receive a a DNA sample kit and a private access code to the database. Students will be able to track their genetic relationships to distant populations regressing through thousands of years of history and pre-history. * This grant project is currently in progress
15. Improving Successful Completion Rates of Online Math Classes Crystine Chipman Chandler-Gilbert Community College (2008-2009) Students in online math classes can often feel alone. They easily get discouraged and fail to complete the courses.
This project is designed to research teaching online math classes and find suggestions that could improve the retention in online classes. It will also find the best practices to increase the feeling of community for online students. These practices will be piloted Fall 2008 semester in online math classes at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, with completion rates being compared to previous semesters. Students' attitudes toward online math classes will also be surveyed. * This grant project is currently in progress
16. Information Literacy Nursing Tutorial: CINAHL Marsha Ballard Scottsdale Community College (2008-2009) Create an information literacy tutorial for nursing students on using the CINAHL database utilizing screencasting technology. * This grant project is currently in progress

Learning Oppurtunities Through Technology (LOTT) Project- Interactive Lecture Feedback System Paul Bosch South Mountain Community College (2008-2009) The Learning Opportunities Through Technology Project (LOTT Project) will create interactive learning experiences for science students by inserting the TurningPoint response system into PowerPoint lectures in biology and geology. Students in gateway college courses in science and math have traditionally shown high failure and withdrawal rates. Marked improvements in performance and persistence have been noted for students experiencing more interactive lectures, with automated pauses to discuss questions and receive immediate feedback on understanding, as can be created using TurningPoint software. * This grant project is currently in progress
18. Learning the Foundation Knowledge for Mathematics using Regular English & Culture Cleopatria Martinez Phoenix College (2008-2009) This project will develop instructional methods and materials for non-traditional learners to actively learn mathematics by using mathematics vocabulary utilized to explain math concepts and with counseling techniques to identify the affective approaches to learning. Attention will be given to developing their number sense and to providing a compatible and non-traditional style and method of instruction. * This grant project is currently in progress
19. Modernizing Modern Art Adria Pecora Paradise Valley Community College (2008-2009) I am seeking funds to support research and development of "Modern Art" ARH 112. This course provides a platform for study of historical, philosophical, and cultural developments that inform upon our present engagement with society, art and media culture. I propose to "modernize" this offering, by 1. expanding the content and by 2. enhancing its delivery through use of new media in the classroom and by adding an online component. I envision the course acting as a forum for synthesizing diverse cultural studies. * This grant project is currently in progress

New Ties/Old ties - Continuing the legacy Lenna DeMarco Glendale Community College (2008-2009) This project is designed to strengthen and expand the ties between prospective and current GCC dance students and alumni who are active locally in dance. A collborative project between Glendale College and the dance program at Peoria HS (directed by alumnus Andrea Chesley) in workshop/master classes/performances by choreographer Pablo Cornejo. * This grant project is currently in progress
