26. Storytelling is for Scientists Maureen Zimmerman Mesa Community College (2008-2009) While storytelling seems a natural pedagogical fit for teachers in the Arts and Humanities, what about storytelling in the Sciences? I have recently elucidated and made explicit to students the enduring ideas--“The Ten Grand Principles of Human Nutrition.” The concept of articulating the “big ideas” is an amalgamation of the work of many learning for understanding experts like Wiggins and McTighe (2005). My next step in this never-ending quest to increase the quality of students’ scientific comprehension is to use storytelling to convey how nutrition scientists do their work, linking these stories to various scientific methods and to the course's Grand Principles. This enhanced course should provide scientific insight and be coherent, relevant, engaging, and memorable. * This grant project is currently in progress
