Engaging Students in Active Learning – Level 1
(Pre-approved for 18 clock hours of non-academic advancement)
This seven-session workshop will provide opportunities for faculty to actively experience strategies that increase student involvement to enhance learning. The purpose of the workshop is to acquaint classroom teachers with active learning strategies, including but not limited to cooperative learning, service learning, classroom assessment techniques, and critical thinking infusion.

Objectives
The participant will be able to:
- establish a class climate for success in active learning as evidenced by respect, encouragement, and free exchange;
- define the concept of active learning and its key elements;
- examine specific models and strategies that teachers use to implement active learning across the curriculum;
- build classroom teams that work cohesively and that demonstrate interdependence and individual accountability;
- form teams randomly as well as heterogeneously;
- facilitate teams' cohesiveness, camaraderie, and ability to work together.
- implement small cooperative learning structures such as Think-Pair-Share, Numbered Heads, and Three-Step Interview;
- plan a service learning component;
- design and use classroom assessment techniques such as Your Ticket Out, 3:2:1 Processing, I Liked/I Learned;
- use strategies that require students to think critically; and
- design assessment that calls for application of critical thinking skills

7 sessions, 2 hours and 45 minutes each
