About Digital Storytelling...
For the past few years, Linda Hicks and Rachel Woodburn have been team teaching a Digital Storytelling class at Scottsdale community college, as well as internationally in New Zealand and Australia. (For residential faculty, this event has been pre-approved for 34 clock hours of non-academic advancement)

"Magnetic Attraction"

Agenda

Prior to the first meeting, there will be: a letter sent to each participant with reading assignments, a web-site to visit, an assignment to write a 250 word story and locate 12 - 20 objects/images which relate to their story. Each participant will be asked to bring all this to the first day of the workshop.

Monday

  • What is story? (45 minutes)
    Introduction to workshop-12 minute DVD and discussion to follow. How do we define story?
  • Object exercise (1 hour 30 minutes)
    Everyone will be asked to tell a story using an object in their possession.
  • Power of Story (30 minutes)
    Show 12 minute video entitled "The Power of Story"/Interviews with storytellers. Discuss how this relates to us and our stories.
  • Elements of Story (30 minutes)
    Discussion of handout- 7 elements of story
  • Project plans (45 minutes)
    Free association writing/make a mini-book activity
  • Lunch Break (1 hour)
  • Teaching Applications/Power of Connection (1 hour 30 minutes)
    Discussion/examples of applications of digital storytelling in various disciplines. (10 minute DVD digital story on India; 15 minute DVD digital story Australia; 30 minute video- Full Circle-Storytelling on the Road)
    Discussion of how storytelling crosses cultural boundaries.
  • Copyright Laws discussion (30 minutes)
    Handout and explanation of copyright laws. What types of music and images can be used in your stories.
  • Feedback (30 minutes)
    Guidelines for offering feedback in this workshop. Instructions as to how to ask for feedback and how to offer appropriate feedback.
  • Begin Process of Reading stories and offering feedback (1 hour 30 minutes)

Tuesday

  • Final story-complete the feedback session in groups (3 hours)
  • Storyboarding (1 hour)
    Demonstrate 2 different storyboarding techniques-Each particiant works on their storyboard
  • Lunch (1 hour)
  • Storyboarding-scanning images (3 hours)
  • Image list (final hour), each participant makes a list of images still needed for their story
  • Sound list (final hour), identify music, sounds needed.

Wednesday

  • Record Voice Over
    It takes 30 minutes per participant (12 participants) to record 3 versions of the story, burn a CD and transfer the voice over to the computer. While the voice overs are being recorded, the other participants will continue to scan and import images into iMovie.

Thursday

  • Preparation and digitization of materials
  • Production Work
  • Editing and Production

Friday

  • Final edit
  • Archiving CD, DVD, miniDV, and or VHS (3 hours)
  • Show of Digital Stories (1 hour)
