what is a "learnshop"?

By any other convention it is a "workshop"... but would you prefer to sign up to "learn" from mcli rather than just "work?" The mcli "learnshops" are a series of professional growth opportunities available to all Maricopa faculty. For details on individual offerings, see below. While these are scheduled activities, we aim to provide all of our materials for you to browse.

Currently, the following LearnShops are available to Maricopa faculty for the 2003-2004 academic year

Engaging Students in Active Learning (September 8 - November 17, 2003)
(pre-approved for 18 clock hours of Faculty Professional Growth non-academic advancement)
This seven-session, 18-hour learnshop will provide opportunities for faculty to actively experience various strategies that increase student involvement, including cooperative learning, critical thinking, and classroom assessment techniques.
Advanced Engaging Students in Active Learning (September 29 - December 8, 2003)
(pre-approved for 18 clock hours of Faculty Professional Growth non-academic advancement)
This six-session, 18-hour workshop, will provide more in-depth opportunities for faculty to actively experience various strategies that increase student involvement, including cooperative learning, critical thinking, and classroom assessment techniques, and will also allow teachers to practice individualizing structures. Team-building and assessment of long-term projects will be part of the experience.
Diversity and Communication in the Service-Learning Experience (next offered TBA)
(pre-approved for 18 clock hours of Faculty Professional Growth non-academic advancement)
This six-session, 18-hour learnshop will acquaint the participants with the multifaceted role of culture and communication in the service-learning experience in a way which facilitates their ability to engage students in discussions inherent to the process of service-learning.
Teaching for Learning: From Syllabus to Assessment (next offered TBA)
(Pre-approved for 22 clock hours of Faculty Professional Growth non-academic advancement)
This eight-session, 22-hour learnshop is designed to help teachers improve and enhance their students' learning. Many of us come to the community college well prepared as experts in our disciplines; however, many of us are not as well prepared in the theoretical foundations of good teaching or in the successful applications and best practices that ensure students will learn. This workshop will provide information and opportunities for faculty to design and create effective teaching environments that actively engage students in meaningful learning, from syllabus to assessment.
Science and Math Technology Intersession Learnshop for Instructors of Pre-Service Education Majors (last offered May 20-23, 2002)

For the past five years, Miami-Dade Community College (MDCC) has been involved in Technology Innovation Challenge Grants Alliance/Alliance+ to train middle and elementary school teachers to use the Internet in teaching math and science across the curriculum. MDCC has expanded the focus of the Alliance+ program to include pre-service preparation of future teachers so that they can learn math and science concepts using technology and the Internet in unique and compelling ways. Specifically, the program is designed to train science, math, and educational technology faculty in the use of Internet technology methodologies.

ASU Summer Institute on College Teaching
These workshops for faculty at Arizona State University cover specific tools and techniques for integrating technology into teachers. We have arrangements that make it possible for Maricopa faculty to register- contact Marybeth Mason for details.

ALIVE Online: Active Learning In Virtual Environments
is a professional development program that will teach you the skills you need to be a successful online facilitator. ALIVE Online has been developed based on validated curriculum from seasoned online instructors. The curriculum incorporates seven levels of learning developed to meet the needs of instructors who are interested in or already teaching online.
