Culturally Inclusive Teaching Strategies LearnShop (Spring 2007)

Multicultural Education: Inclusive Learning

This workshop has been pre-approved for 15 clock hours Faculty Professional Growth non-academic advancement.

The purpose of this learnshop is to facilitate the design and creation of culturally inclusive classrooms and campus environments so that educational equity and cultural empowerment for all students is present.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to accomplish the following:

  1. Establish their own inclusive teaching and learning philosophy and goals.
  2. Identify and communicate the underlying assumption of their diversity philosophy.
  3. Develop and demonstrate the ability to apply multicultural thinking skills to their own respective discpline.
  4. Reflect upon and demonstrate in writing how, what and why they are learning about diversity and cross cultural thinking
  5. Describe their own level of commitment to implement multicultural thinking into their teaching
  6. Create and implement instructional activities to facilitate inclusive learning environments for students.

Learnshop activities will include:

  1. Interactive mini-lectures and experiential activities
  2. Journal writing
  3. Large- and small-group discussions
  4. Collaborative group exercises
  5. Portfolio development
  6. Video clips
  7. Assessment and reflection, including peer presentations
  8. Event evaluation

3:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. at Scottsdale Community College, BU 132

Facilitators

All three presenters are counseling faculty within the Maricopa Community Colleges, and have extensive education and experience as diversity educators (multiculturalism, intercultural communication, student retention, and alternative teaching and learning strategies).

  • Stephanie Fujii, M.A.: Stephanie has served the Maricopa Community College District since 1996 as counseling faculty at Estrella Mountain Community College. She is currently on reassignment as the district Faculty Recruitment Coordinator. She has been involved in diversity/multicultural education since 1989 as an advisor, trainer, consultant, counselor, and teacher. She has presented regionally and nationally on diversity issues, such as identity development theory and students of color, inclusive teaching practices, and student success.
  • Tanisha Johnson-Maxwell: Tanisha has nearly ten years of experience in the Maricopa Community College District working in the areas of counseling, instruction, student life, academic advisement, and orientation/retention. She has presented nationally, regionally, and locally on a variety of professionally related topics including academic persistence in higher education, racial identity development, culturally sensitive communication, diversity in the workplace, multicultural counseling intentions, and culturally-responsive program evaluation.
  • Eric Haas, Ph.D.: Eric has been with the Maricopa Community College District since February, 2003. He has presented at a number of colleges and universities on diversity issues, such as racial/ethnic identity development, racism and discrimination, and privilege. He has also taught courses on diversity in education and multiculturalism at Coconino Community College and the University of California-Irvine.
