What
Miami-Dade Community College, in association with the Maricopa Community Colleges, will be offering a
four-day Science and Math Technology Learnshop May 20-23, 2002. The program is designed to train science,
math, and educational technology faculty in the use of Internet technology methodologies so, as they teach their
students who are education majors, they can:

- Model the use of real time data available on the Internet;
- Engage their students in telecollaborative experiences using the Internet;
- Motivate their students to communicate via email with experts; and
- Inspire their students to publish their work on the Internet.
Participants will also have an opportunity to develop additional Internet-based curriculum materials.
Basic computer skills are a pre-requisite to this learnshop.
Why Offered For the past five years, Miami-Dade Community College (MDCC) has been involved in
Technology Innovation Challenge Grants Alliance/Alliance+ to train middle and elementary school teachers to use the Internet in teaching math and science across the curriculum. During these training sessions, faculty in the Alliance+ program discovered that MDCC, like Maricopa, has a significant number of education majors and most of them are in elementary or early childhood education. Usually, these majors receive their only math and science coursework at the community college. When they transfer, they take mostly education courses. Therefore, MDCC has expanded the focus of the Alliance+ program to include pre-service preparation of future teachers so that they can learn math and science concepts using technology and the Internet in unique and compelling ways.
Participants
The learnshop is open to 12 Maricopa science, math, or technology faculty. It is primarily
designed for, but not limited to, those faculty who are interested in collaborative efforts to improve
science and math instruction and who teach courses having pre-service education majors. These courses
include: BIO 100, 101, 102, 105, 108, 109/110; CHM 107; GLG 101/103, 105, 110/111; GPH 111; MAT 142,
156/157; PHS 110; PHY 101. We would like to have at least one faculty member from each college.
- Each participant will receive $760 ($19.00/h x 40 h) for attending the entire learnshop.
- Each participant can receive another $500 for developing an additional module for the project.
- Individuals are encouraged to apply who might consider becoming a trainer to train additional science and
- math instructors.

Learnshop Leaders:
Melinda Rudibaugh, Division Chair, Science and Mathematics at Chandler-Gilbert
Community College will team up with Jorge Salinas, Professor of Chemistry and Melinda Prague, Professor of
English, at Miami-Dade Community College to conduct the learnshop. The MDCC faculty are core trainers in the
Alliance+ grant.
