2004-2005 MIL Fellows: About Dr. Craig Jacobsen the maricopa institute for learning
Craig Jacobsen completed Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in English at Ohio State University before moving west to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree in American Literature from Arizona State in 1997. He has been residential English and Humanities faculty at Mesa Community College since 2001, teaching first-year composition, literature and film courses.
Craig's central interest, how meaning is constructed and conveyed, has led him to research, present, publish, and conduct workshops on subjects as apparently far-flung as Xena, Warrior Princess, role-playing as a teaching tool, the ethics of artificial intelligence, automobile advertising, and teaching science fiction. He co-authored, with Greg Glau, a first-year composition textbook, Scenarios for Writing, and is working on a second book.
Dr. Jacobsen's research project grows from his desire to eliminate the temporal and geographic barriers that limit students' ability to take the courses that best meet their needs. He believes that emerging technologies offer tremendous potential for collaboration amongst students in constructing knowledge artifacts as a way of learning.
Craig lives in Gilbert with his wife, Laura, a children's illustrator, and their two spaniels.
