about rosemary leary

rosemary leary photo Dr. Rosemary Leary, chemistry faculty at Estrella Mountain Community College, emcc logo received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and her Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Arizona State University. Rosemary is the only chemistry faculty at Estrella Mountain Community College and therefore teaches a broad spectrum of courses as well as developing and planning all chemistry labs and working with all adjunct chemistry faculty.

Before joining the Maricopa family a brief three years ago, Dr. Leary held a number of diverse positions. These included researcher at the Arizona Science Center, instructional design specialist at the University of Washington, and research assistant at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. She has also worked as an adjunct instructor for both Arizona State University and the Maricopa Community College District teaching courses in both education and chemistry.

NSTARosemary has written and published multiple laboratory manuals and papers, presented her work in both biochemical and educational research to various professional organizations, and currently serves as a manuscript reviewer for both Science and Children and for The Journal of College Science Teaching.

Her professional interests lie in using the understandings from cognitive psychology to design and implement optimal learning environments for chemistry students. She strongly believes that it is the student who is ultimately responsible for individual learning and it is the instructor's role to facilitate that process. She is an active advocate for female students interested in careers in science and engineering, for encouraging all qualified students to consider working on Honor's projects in chemistry, and for enabling student success in chemistry.

Rosemary is married and has three children. They have lived in Arizona for 21 years, both in Page, Arizona and in the Phoenix metropolitan area, and enjoy exploring the diversity of the state together. Rosemary's other interests include reading (especially historical novels, suspense and mysteries), hiking, and travel.
